Windows 10 phones announced

Microsoft has announced a trio of new smartphones that will introduce Windows 10 to the mobile device community. These devices are the Lumia 550, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

Lumia 950 XL

The most advanced of the three Windows 10 phones is the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. This exceptional smartphone has a very large 5.7-inch display that has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Protected behind Corning Gorilla Glass 4, this durable phone has a display that is scratch and knock resistant.

A high-end 20MP camera, with high resolution zoom and quick focus, recreates natural illumination in the dark through a triple LED flash. 4K video recording (4x higher definition that full HD) is possible and there is a 5MP selfie camera that can itself record at full HD.

The excellence of specifications is rounded off by a quad-core 2GHz processor and a 3000mAh battery that can be recharged through the new USB C port. USB C cables can be inserted either way up and fast charge the battery to 50 percent capacity in just 30 minutes.

Windows 10 features

Windows 10 brings a whole host of great features to the Lumia 950 XL. For productivity the phone offers Windows Continuum, which enables the phone to project its screen onto a monitor through the Microsoft Display Dock. An external keyboard and mouse can be used and Office apps up scale themselves for the larger screen.

Security is provided through Windows Hello Beta and this new piece of Microsoft technology uses an IR camera to scan the owners face, for authorised access. Windows 10 also brings the new Microsoft Edge web browser to smartphones with its readability mode and option to draw over web pages.

Cortana also makes an appearance on the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and the digital assistant works in sync across all devices. This means that a location based reminder set on a Windows PC will be activated on Windows phone.

Lumia 950

The Microsoft Lumia 950 steps down the spec just slightly and brings Windows 10 to consumers on a 5.2” display. Designed to provide readability under strong light, the display is protected behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
