Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Review

The Xperia range is packed with some great handsets and here we take a look at one of the latest releases from Sony. In our Sony Xperia Z5 Compact review we take a look at the build quality, design and all the best bits you need to know.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Design

The Xperia range is synonymous with quality and this certainly rings true when you pick up the Xperia Z5 Compact with its smooth feeling glass exterior and the precision engineered frame. The handset feels quality all the way and the 4.6-inch touchscreen display is responsive and impressive when browsing or watching video clips.

The slim chassis is just 8.9mm thick and as the phone only weighs 138 grams it has a lightweight feel in the hand.

Xperia Z5 Compact features

After having a good nose around the build quality of the phone we dive into what is on offer inside this smartphone from Sony. The Android Lollipop OS has plenty of great apps pre-loaded and with an octacore processor and 2GB RAM on board the Z5 Compact ran multiple and demanding apps easily.

The 4.6-inch screen may not be as big as some of the other flagship models, but as this is the compact version a big screen is not high on the wish-list of the intended market. The screen was perfectly adequate for web browsing and gaming was good on the Z5 Compact.

Sony has added some extra features to the Android ones including a Lifelog app which will help you achieve your fitness goals. The app will keep an ongoing log of various things such as steps take, distance covered and calories burnt as well as locations visited and time spent watching TV. The app will give you some tips to make lifestyle changes and will show how your activity compares to that of people in other countries.

The sound quality of this smartphone is fantastic with Hi-Res audio and S-Force Front Surround Sound and there is Digital Noise Cancelling included so when you use headphones or make calls everything is clear sounding.

z5 compact battery

The battery performed well with approximately a day and a half of high to medium mixed usage, Sony state that you should be able to get two days between charges and this would be achievable with normal use. The Z5 Compact includes the Quick Charge facility which can add hours more usage from quick ten minute charge, however this does require a different charger that is purchased separately so we didn’t get to give that a try.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Camera

Sony smartphone cameras can usually be relied upon to deliver pretty impressive image results and the Xperia Z5 Compact certainly didn’t disappoint in this area. The 23-megapixel camera on the back is packed with a lot of the technology found in Sony Compact cameras and it took great shots in varied light conditions. The 24mm wide angle lens takes in more of the surroundings into a shot and the autofocus works quickly (0.03 seconds) which is good for moving subjects.

xperia z5 camera quality

Video quality was excellent as the Z5 Compact can record 4K video and the 5x Clear Image Zoom worked well to bring distant objects into focus. The 5-megapixel front facing camera delivered great shots too and again there is a wide angle lens on the front for getting group shots.

In previous smartphone releases a “Compact”version of a flagship model usually meant that the spec sheet was scaled down too, but not so on the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. This phone is packed with most of the great stuff seen on the Z5 full size model, so if you are a fan of smaller screened phones this one will be the perfect choice.
