Sony Xperia Acro S and Xperia Go Announced

The Sony Xperia line-up is expanding with the newest additions to the range coming in the form of the Xperia Go and the Xperia Acro S. These handsets are designed to be the toughies of the family with water-proof casings and scratch proof mineral glass protected screens.

First up the Xperia Acro S, this high-end phone has a 4.3-inch HD Reality display that is covered by a waterproof and scratch resistant glass with wet finger tracking (as seen on the Xperia Active). IP 57 certification means the handset is dust-resistant and can survive taking a dip in water up to 1m in depth for 30 minutes.

Aside from the tough stuff the Android 4.0 Acro S is packing some high-end hardware with a 1.5GHx dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory and a 12-megapixel camera with an Exmor R Sensor with 1080p FullHD video recording as well as a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front for video calls.

Next up to join the Sony Smartphone family is the Xperia Go and this handset is designed to be the budget tough phone of the group. Packing the same water protection as the Acro S the IP67 certification on this phone means that is it dust-proof rather than just dust-resistant like the Acro S. There is a 3.5-inch Reality display and a more modest 5-megapixel snapper with 720p video recording. The phone does have a 1GHz dual-core processor as well as 512MB of RAM so it should handle the Android 2.3 OS pretty well (expected upgrades to ICS should become available after launch).

The phones are expected to have a worldwide release sometime during Q3 of 2012 so keep watching for news of availability.
