Sony Xperia 1 review

Sony has delivered smartphones that are high-quality and stand out from the rest of the market. In my Sony Xperia 1 review, I take a look at the new flagship which is packed with impressive technology.

Sony Xperia 1 design

The first thing you will notice on the Sony Xperia 1 is the display. This is a world’s first for a smartphone, a CinemaWide 21:9 aspect ratio 4K HDR OLED screen. The screen is long but the phone remains slim, a distinctive look for this beautifully made phone.

The display is made for entertainment with the ability to stream Netflix content in 21:9 giving you a cinematic experience. If you watch any video or other media that is not 4K or HDR, the phone will upscale the video.

The screen has a resolution of 3,840 x 1644 pixels which equals 643 pixels per inch. A specialised Creator Mode uses CinemaAlta technology to produce accurate colours. Corning Gorilla Glass 6, a top durable glass, is used on both the front and back of the phone. IP64 certified this smartphone is water and dust resistant.
The Sony Xperia 1 measures 8.2mm thick and is available in black, purple, white or grey.

Sony Xperia 1 features

The Xperia 1 is an Android 9 smartphone which has been enhanced with the Sony User Interface. A standout feature of the UI is the Side Sense feature. This uses AI to show apps based on when you use them and where you are located.

The long display comes into its own when using multiple apps and split-screen is much easier on this longer device.

The cinematic experience is further improved with the amazing sound quality of this device. Dolby Atmos sound creates multi-dimensional sound to completely surround you in the audio from all sides. High-resolution audio and the stereo speaker makes music or movie or games audio sound impressive. Bluetooth 5.0 is also included which allows you to connect a compatible speaker or headset.

Snapdragon Elite Gaming, a game enhancing feature boosts power when playing games and will block notifications so you can play uninterrupted. You can record and share your game session and PS4 Remote Play is also supported.

The battery on board is a 3,330mAH unit which includes Smart Stamina mode. This can predict power needs based on how you use the phone and can adjust settings throughout the day to give you enough power to get to a charger.

Adaptive charging and Battery Care will help to extend the life and effectiveness of the battery.

Sony Xperia 1 camera

The camera on the Sony Xperia 1 is simply superb, as you probably would expect from a manufacturer with such a strong camera technology pedigree. A triple Leica lens on the back consists of different lenses so you can capture the perfect shot at different ranges.

The 16mm Super-wide lens captures amazing landscapes shots with a 135-degree image. The 26mm and 52mm lens provide 2 x optical zoom.

The camera is packed with lots of great shooting features including:

  • Bokeh effect for background blur
    Fast Focus
    3D Creator
    5x digital zoom
    RAW noise reduction
Super Slow motion video at 960fps

There is an 8-megapixel selfie camera with Portrait Modes that can turn any shot into a professional looking image with different lighting effects.

The Sony Xperia 1 is beautifully made with high-end materials inside and out. The screen is simply amazing for watching movies or multitasking and the camera is one of the best on the market.
