Smartphone review: Oneplus 7 Pro

In my OnePlus 7 Pro review, I take a look at a smartphone that takes performance to new levels. If you are looking for the ultimate mobile gaming experience or want to take photos like a real pro, then the OnePlus 7 Pro should be top of the wishlist.

OnePlus 7 Pro design

The OnePlus 7 Pro has an amazing screen that measures 6.67-inches. The Fluid AMOLED display has QHD+ resolution of 3,120x 1,440 pixels and this delivers finer detail than most other flagship phones.

You will experience a super smooth viewing experience with the world’s first AMOLED display that has a 90Hz refresh rate. This delivers bright highlights, deep blacks, and stunning clear detail.

The display is certified for HDR10+ playback, with videos from Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and YouTube. There are three screen modes:

  • Night Mode 2.0 (blue light filter)
  • Reading Mode
  • Video Enhancer.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a back that is made from 3D Corning Gorilla Glass. The front is also glass and this curves over at the edges for an all-screen look. The phone is available in Almond, Nebula Blue, or Mirror Grey.

The phone measures 8.8mm thick and weighs in at 206g. This makes the phone a little thicker and heavier than some, but you get lots of amazing technology for that.

OnePlus 7 Pro features

The Setup Wizard and OnePlus Switch features will get you up and running quickly. You can bring over all of your content from your old smartphone easily.

There is no microSD card slot, so you will need to decide whether you want a 128GB or 256GB version. Screen Unlock occurs in 0.21 seconds with a larger in-screen fingerprint sensor. The in-screen sensor lights can be customised to your choice of animations including stripe, ripple, and cosmos. Other security options include Face Unlock and PIN code.

The OnePlus 7 Pro features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 2.84GHz octa-core processor with up to 12GB RAM. RAM Boost pushes the processor into performance mode when you need it. It also predicts and loads your favourite apps in the background, so they appear instantly when you want them.

If you are a mobile gamer then the OnePlus 7 Pro is definitely for you. Gaming Mode will disable automatic brightness and allow you to choose how notifications or incoming calls are handled during gameplay. You can tap Fnatic Mode and get rid of notification distractions altogether.

The OxygenOS is based on the Android 9 OS and refines the overall design of the menus, which now include smooth animations and navigation gestures.

OxygenOS delivers in a big way with these key features:

  • Zen Mode – wind down and switch off from phone distractions for 20 minutes
  • Quick Reply in Landscape Mode – no need to switch apps when you are playing games or watching videos
  • Video Enhancer – increase the sharpness or contrast to makes colours even more vivid
  • Alert Slider – quickly switch between ring, silent, and vibrate for incoming notifications or calls.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a 4,000mAh battery with Warp Charge 30. The phone is ready in 20 minutes and the Warp Charge 30 feature helps the phone stay cool during charging even if you are using the phone. The enhanced charging features allow the OnePlus 7 Pro charge up to 30% faster than the OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera

The camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro is made up of three lenses:

  • 48MP main camera
  • 16MP ultra wide angle lens – increases the range of photos to a 117 degree field of view
  • 8MP telephoto lens – 3x optical zoom at increments of 0.6x, 1x, and 3x zoom

Portrait Mode gives you accurate and precise results, while AI Smart Scene Recognition automatically adjusts the camera settings for you depending on the subject of the photo.

Nightscape 2.0 uses a large image sensor to capture more light while Dual Image Stabilisation and UltraShot create professional looking images.

The OnePlus 7 Pro video features include:

  • Super Slow Motion
  • 4K quality video recording
  • Time-lapse
  • Video Editor
  • Google Lens

The pop-up selfie camera is one of the unique features of this phone. The OnePlus 7 Pro selfie camera slides up seamlessly and it retracts if it senses that the phone is being dropped. The mechanism has been durability tested to 300,000 actions to make sure it lasts. Selfie tools include Face Retouching and Screen Flash as well as many shooting options and filters to create unique photos.

Verdict:

The amazing features packed into the OnePlus 7 Pro make this a perfect choice for gamers or photography fans. The high-quality build and cool pop up camera area real draw and the overall user experience rivals that of much more expensive smartphones.
