Samsung Pay Launch for UK Delayed

Samsung has been a little quiet about their Samsung Pay service when it comes to UK availability and there is a reason for that. The Samsung Pay launch for the UK has been delayed until next year so if you have your Galaxy S7 at the ready you will have to be patient to make payments through the Samsung service.

Samsung confirmed that Samsung Pay on their devices would be launched in the UK in 2016 but it looks like negotiations with UK banks is causing delays.

This means that Samsung Pay will not be available until 2017,putting them behind the likes of Apple and Android Pay. The UK contactless payment market has seen Apple Pay launch in 2015 followed by Android Pay earlier this year so Samsung will be behind these other players with this feature.

The Samsung system does have one benefit not seen on the others which is that it can be used at non-contactless terminals with technology similar to the strip on credit cards making it available at any card terminal even if it doesn’t state that it is contactless.

Contactless Payments on Smartphones

For now anyone with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and other Samsung Pay handsets will have to use the Android Pay alternative for their contactless payments in the UK. The latest Android Pay doesn’t work with the Samsung Gear Smartwatch however so owners of that particular wearable will have to wait until next year to use the tech on the wrist to pay for their coffee or lunch.
