Samsung Galaxy S9+ Review

In my Samsung Galaxy S9+ review I take a look at the reinvented camera and the new features that Samsung has added to their latest flagship device.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ Design

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ has one of the biggest screens you will see on any smartphone. The 6.2” Super AMOLED Infinity Display is near bezel-less, making it the big display easier to hold. The Quad HD+ resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels means you get extra rows of pixels to see further down a webpage without scrolling or to enjoy a widescreen movie experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ measures just 8.5mm thick and is slightly weightier than the S9 at189g. The Galaxy S9+ is on offer in either Midnight Black, Titanium Grey, Coral Blue or Lilac Purple.

The phone is IP68 certified for dust and water resistance and the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ Features

The 2.7GHz octa-core processor works with the 6GB RAM for a seamless experience, even on demanding apps or games.

The security features of the phone have been bolstered with the new Intelligent Scan system. This makes facial recognition and the iris scanner work together, at the same time. This is much more secure than the standard ways of unlocking the phone and it even works well in low light.

You can still opt for the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone, this has been moved to the back of the phone in a much more natural position.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus has a decent internal memory of 64GB, there is also a memory card slot for cards up to 400GB.

Samsung has added a few of their own apps to the Android Oreo package, these include Bixby Assistant, Virus and malware protection and Edge Screen for quick access to apps and other features.

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ includes Dolby Atmos stereo surround sound speakers. Tuned by AKG these are more powerful than the speakers on the previous Galaxy releases. The headphones included in the box are also tuned by AKG.

The Galaxy S9+ has a bigger battery to deal with the larger display and extend usage times. This power pack should give you up to 94 hours of music playback or up to 15 hours of internet browsing. The phone is also compatible with wireless charging, although this will require the purchase or a charging stand separately.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ Camera

The Galaxy S9+ has a dual camera with 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The dual cameras allow for live focus which can blur the background as you shoot. The camera also includes bokeh filters that can change the shape of lights in the blurred background and other effects.

The 12MP camera has been designed to use a dual aperture technology, this allows it to adjust like the human eye. The aperture can open a little or a lot, to reduce light when it is too bright or let in more light when it’s dark.

The new AR Emoji is a fun new feature that uses the 8MP selfie camera to take a picture of you and then convert it into an animated portrait. You can then use this as multiple emojis in chat, posts and messages.

The super slow-mo mode captures a short burst of video at 960fps and plays it back super slowly. The slow-mo video can be used to create a GIF with forward, reverse or swing playback.

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ has many features including Panorama, Live Translation, Food and 4K video recording.

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ delivers big things, starting with the display right through to the amazing dual rear camera. The many Samsung apps really enhance the Android experience and the overall build quality of the phone is superb. The price of the handset is quite high, but you get a lot for your money.
