Leave your computer behind with Samsung DeX

Leave your computer behind with Samsung DeX

First we had Microsoft introduce Continuum and now we Samsung introducing DeX, for its Galaxy S8 range of smartphones. Both ‘docks’ essentially do the same thing and will allow you to leave your computer behind.

The Samsung DeX dock costs around £130 in the UK and connects your Samsung Galaxy S8 or Samsung Galaxy S8+ to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. You then get to enjoy a desktop like experience that is powered by your smartphone.

The DeX experience

The DeX experience will allow you to see more content through the expanded interface. This makes tasks that are fiddly on a phone easy, so reviewing documents, checking notifications, sending an email, copying and pasting or making text bold, is easy with a physical keyboard and mouse.

Further to these benefits, you can multitask with multiple documents, use keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop files into a Samsung Email or Messages App and access contextual menus with a right click of the mouse.

Samsung DeX

With DeX , you can also browse the internet or read the news with the Samsung Internet desktop interface, watch YouTube videos or play games. Advanced photo editing becomes possible by downloading Adobe apps like Lightroom Mobile and you can download subscription based apps, like Microsoft Office mobile apps.

DeX compatible apps

There are almost thirty DeX compatible apps that transform themselves to become more desktop like:

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft OneDrive

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe Photoshop Mix

Hancom Office

Amazon WorkSpaces

Citrix Receiver

VMware Horizon Client

Google Drive

Chrome Browser

Google Play Movies & TV

Google Play Music

Google Photos

Play Store

AutoCAD Mobile

Lineage 2 Revolution

The Tribez

DeX connectivity

The DeX dock has a built-in cooling fan for safe recharging of your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. You will find several ports for connectivity including Ethernet, HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB Type-C ports.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+ will remain active for phone calls and text messages, accessible through the taskbar monitor.

Taskbar notifications

Businesses may want to take the experience further by buying licenses to Remotely Access Virtual Windows, with a service like Amazon WorkSpaces, VMware Horizon Client or Citrix Receiver.

With DeX you can keep your files stored on your device and without the need to use the cloud, you know that you are always working on the latest version of files. You can also keep documents safe in the Secure Folder and this requires an additional password, even after the phone is placed in the DeX dock.
