Oppo Reno 5G review

The Oppo brand is still relatively unfamiliar to the UK market but they have been delivering lots of exciting devices. Our Oppo Reno 5G review takes a closer look at this latest 5G smartphone from this manufacturer.

Oppo Reno 5G build

The Oppo Reno 5G has a 6.6-inch (resolution of 1080x 2340 pixels), the selfie camera is placed in a unique shark-fin module that slides up so there is no cutout for the sensor. This makes the phone an all-screen device thanks to the very slim bezels.

The phone has been made with glass and so it has a beautifully crafted feel. The sleek design has been enhanced further with a back cover that is smooth, there is no camera bump. The Oppo Reno 5G comes in Ocean Green or Jet Black. The phone weighs 215g and measures 9.3 mm. Although that isn’t as lightweight as some other phones, the 5G speed and pop-up camera more than makes up for it.

Oppo Reno 5G features

The Oppo Reno 5G has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor on board. The phone comes with 256GB of onboard memory and 8GB RAM. Even though the phone has a large onboard memory, you still get a microSD card slot which can be used with cards of up to 256GB.
The Oppo Reno 5G has plenty of technology onboard and for the fingerprint sensor, it uses the latest innovation. The fingerprint sensor is placed under the phone display which is much more accurate and quicker for unlocking the phone.

The Oppo Reno 5G has Android 9 onboard and this comes with lots of familiar apps right out of the box. Oppo has added their own UX which works with the Android system for improved user experience. There are a number of features that are designed to help improve performance and efficiency.

Some of the features of ColourOS 6 include:

    • Drop down settings – the standard icons get a new look, a redesign sees bigger tiles for finding the right options when you slide down from the top
    • App Cloning – you can create more than one copy of your apps which allows you to access different accounts on the same applications from your phone
    • App Drawer – instead of a series of home screens with different apps spread across them, the Oppo Reno 5G uses an App Drawer. This is a searchable window that can be slid up on any screen

One of the big selling points of this phone is the 5G connectivity. The Oppo Reno 5G is ready for the 5G rollout. Although this may not be in your current city, the 5G network will be increasing throughout the year. When you find yourself connected to a 5G network you will be able to enjoy amazing download speeds.

The Oppo Reno 5G has an impressive 4,065mAh battery with Flash Charge. The included 20W Type-C fast charger can deliver a charge in super-quick time. Whatever you are doing, whether it’s gaming or browsing, the Oppo Reno 5G has the battery capacity to keep going.

Oppo Reno 5G camera

The Oppo Reno 5G has a triple rear camera which is a:
48MP main camera
13MP telephoto lens
8MP ultra-wide camera

These cameras work together to capture amazing photos whatever the subject. The 48MP camera makes sure you get lots of detail in the shot. The clarity of these images means you can take a shot of a landscape and zoom in to a particular part without losing detail. Optical image stabilisation delivers blur-free shots and the telephoto lens has advanced zoom performance without losing clarity. The telephoto lens is constructed with glass elements and a prism lens to provide Hybrid Zoom which is truly impressive.

The ultra-wide lens takes in much more of your surroundings making it perfect for group photos or capturing landscapes. AI technology will adjust the settings of the lenses depending on the subject detected in the shot.It can recognise different objects and scenery types. The settings are adjusted instantly just before you take the photo.

Shooting modes include:
Google Lens
Night Mode

There is a 16-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture on the front for taking selfies. The camera is hidden away in a module that will pop-up when you choose the selfie camera option. Pop-up camera lenses have been the trend lately with lots of manufacturers moving this way with their camera designs. Oppo is the first one to go for a shark-fin design. The mechanism that controls this has been tested to make sure it will stand up to long-term use.

There are plenty of shooting modes and editing options to make sure you are happy with the final image before posting it on social media. The LED flash provides ample lighting for low light photos and you can capture video with the selfie camera at 30fps and 1080p resolution.
The overall look and design of this phone give it a fantastic feel. The Oppo Reno 5G camera is amazing and it can handle any task you are doing. You may not know this brand too well but this phone is a great choice for your next phone upgrade.
