OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition review

The latest release from OnePlus has been released in a special edition, in my OnePlus 6T McLaren edition I see what features this special release has to offer.

OnePlus 6T design

The big 6.41-inch display is the focal point of this smartphone as it takes up the whole front of the device. The phone has an 86% screen to body ratio so you are immersed into the screen for entertainment. The phone is slim at 8.2mm and weighs in at 185g.

The body is water and dust resistant and the McLaren inspiration can be seen in the final look of this phone.

The McLaren team colour of Papaya has been used as design accents and there is a carbon fibre panel beneath the glass cover. This is a tribute to the fact that the McLaren F1 team was the first one to use carbon fibre on their race cars.

The McLaren logo is on the back cover and you get access to exclusive themes and other features with this device compared to the standard OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T features

The phone includes a Qualcomm 845 2.8GHz processor and up to 10GB RAM which makes for an amazing performance for gaming or other demanding apps. This is a bump up on the standard model which has 8GB RAM. While this doesn’t particularly offer anything extra when using standard apps, you will see a big difference in 3D gaming and when editing video.

A big 256GB memory means you have tons of space for moving over content from your old phone or storing your photos captured on the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition rear and selfie cameras.

Security options include Face Unlock and there is also a fingerprint sensor built into the display, rather than the traditional sensor on the back used in other smartphones.

Android 9 works with the OxygenOS to give you a superb overall experience. Features include:

Gaming mode

Display mode options such as Reading Mode and Night Mode

Gesture controls

There are lots of Google apps on board including Google Assistant which can be used to complete different tasks using voice commands.

The McLaren F1 theme continues with the system colours and themes. The App Drawer and Quick Settings are adorned with the grey, black and orange team colours.

Audio is delivered at a decent volume thanks to the Dirac Power Sound and Dirac HD Sound features.

The OnePlus 6T has a 3,700mAh battery which is enough to get you through a day of mixed use. The McLaren influence has been added to the battery here too. You get a Warp Charge feature which gives you a fully charged battery in just 20 minutes.

OnePlus 6T camera

OnePlus has gone with a dual lens module on the 6T with a 16-megapixel and a 20-megapixel Sony camera on the back. The two lenses combine images for Optical Image Stabilisation and amazing Night Mode shots.

AI scene detection can recognise different types of landscapes and will adjust the settings to make sure you get a great shot.

Multi-frame processing delivers impressive clarity and detail to each image too.

The camera includes Studio Lighting which will add dramatic lighting effects from different angles for professional looking photos.

The OnePlus 6T offers 4K video recording and slow-motion capture at a lower resolution. The Video Editor is easy to use and allows you to crop, loop and reverse sections of videos as well as add in slow motion bits.

The large 10GB RAM and powerful processor really come into play here making it responsive and easy to create amazing videos after editing.

The front facing camera is a decent 16-megapixel lens and includes Smile Capture, Screen Flash and Portrait Mode.

Face Retouching and other beauty modes allow you to add filters, effects and other features before sharing the final image.

The OnePlus 6T McLaren gives you lots of flagship features at a lower price than other equivalent models. The fantastic display and responsiveness of this phone make it perfect for work or personal use. The dual camera and high-resolution selfie camera will appeal to those that love taking snaps on their mobiles too. The McLaren Edition touches of bigger RAM, faster charging and excellent craftsmanship will be appreciated by everyone, not just Formula 1 fans.
