MWC 2016: Xiaomi Announces Mi5

Xiaomi may not be a name your too familiar with but the manufacturer has had huge success in overseas markets and it looks like they might be making their way here. In their first European press conference Xiaomi announced the Mi5, a beautiful and affordable smartphone.

Xiaomi Mi 5 – Beautiful curves

The Xiaomi brand is known for making affordable phones and the Mi5 delivers lots of beauty along with an attractive price. The device measures only 7.5mm thick with a curved back, similar to the curves on the Samsung S7, and the phone will be released in black, white and gold along with a ceramic model too.

The 5.1-inch touchscreen stretches across to the edges of the phone for a better fit in the hand and the latest Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB RAM is on board. There is a 16-megapixel camera which includes the Sony sensor with a super quick 0.3 second autofocus and there is a 3,000mAh battery.

The lack of a removable battery and absence of microSD card slot could be off putting to some but the phone will be sold in 64GB and 128GB versions with 4GB RAM and the lower 3GB RAM on a 32GB model.

The Xiaomi Mi5 runs the MUI7 which works with the Android M OS and will get weekly updates for new features and the prices announced during the concert make this phone cheap for all the tech that has been packed into it.

The Xiaomi event confirmed the Mi5 will be launched in China on March 1st followed by other markets, although there was no specific mention of a European release the fact that the product was announced at the MWC 2016 would hint towards the manufacturer intending to release it here too.

Do you think you would buy this phone if it’s released in the UK? The specification is as impressive as many of the flagship devices announced at the MWC at a fraction of the cost – would this tempt you to buy the phone?
