MWC 2012 – Best in Show

The MWC in Barcelona has come to a close and with so many new handsets put on show to tempt us we have picked some of our favourites to be touted by the manufacturers.

#5 Huawei Ascend D Quad

After impressing at the CES with the Ascend P1 Huawei continue to surprise by firmly setting themselves amongst the top manufacturers for great phones. Huawei has stated an intention to be amongst the top three mobile phone manufacturers and these latest phones show how serious they are. The whopping 4.5-inch IPS display has a 720p esolution and there is a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor under the hood. There is an 8-megapixel camera and the phone ships with Android Ice Cream Sandwich on board and whilst it may not be at the top of the pack, Huawei can be happy that they are now stepping out amongst the big boys.

#4 Nokia 808 PureView

It’s not like Nokia to surprise us but they did just that with the 808 PurView. The amazing optical package on this phone had everyone abuzz, a whopping 41-megapixel sensor with Nokia technology allowing sharper and clearer capture than has ever been possible on a mobile phone. The phone packs a ton of impressive digital camera technology into it and if only Nokia hadn’t decided to opt for it’s archaiac Symbian OS on board this phone would have been a clear winner.

#3 LG Optimus 4X HD

Quad-core has been the buzzword in mobile for a while now and LG were the first ones out of the gate with their quad-core Optimus 4X HD. The whopping 4.7-inch True HD IPS display is impressive and as expected on a higher end phone there is an 8-megapixel camera and an expandable memory. The phone has Android 4.0 on board along with an LG UI and the phone is expected later this year.

2# Sony Xperia P

With so many Android phones all looking rather similar you would be hard pushed to tell them apart and Sony did well to stand out with their latest offerings. The Xperia range has a block design, rounded back and a nifty clear plastic bar that lights up in different colours depending on whats on the screen. The Xperia P features the same premium unibody aluminium design as the top-spec Xperia S and this mid-reange sibling has the White Magic display on board. This makes the phone easy to use in direct sunlight and with an 8-megapixel camera and dual-core processor this is a great handset.

#1 HTC One X

After a dissappointing last quarter in 2011 we were unsure how HTC would pull themselves back into the game, but the HTc One X is a step in the right direction. Quad-core power and hgih-end camera features were big focuses at the event this year and the HTC One X has both. The quad-core processor delivers impressive power and Android Ice Cream Sandwich is on board. The dedicated imaging chip adds impressive features to the 8-megapixel camera like continuous shot mode and the ability to take photos during video capture without interrupting recording. HTC has really spent a lot of time on the design of this handset and it shows making the HTC One X our stand-out favourite at the MWC and another possible winner for smartphone of 2012.
