LG G8 ThinQ 5G review

The latest offering from LG is packed with some innovative and unique technology. In my LG G8 ThinQ 5G review, I take a look at what this new phone has on board.

LG G8 ThinQ 5G design

The LG G8 5G ThinQ features a 6.1-inch FullVision display with a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels. Stretching from edge-to-edge, the display uses Screen Colour adapting technology to adjust settings when watching videos or gaming. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and includes Always-On features to give you a snapshot of information at a glance.

A unique feature of the G8 ThinQ 5G is that the whole screen acts as the speaker, there is no call receiver. You simply place your ear anywhere on the screen to hear the caller and it works amazingly well so you can clearly hear what is being said.

The phone is available in Black, Grey or Red and weighs in at 167g. The chassis is IP68 certified so it is water-resistant and it has a military grade of MIL-STD-810G for resistance to shocks. The phone is slim at just 8mm thick making it easy to use one-handed.

LG G8 ThinQ features

The LG G8 ThinQ 5G is all about performance with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 2.84GHz processor on board. There is 6GB RAM and a specially designed heat pipe moves any heat away from the processor for longer use and better efficiency. 128GB of onboard storage gives you lots of space but if you do need more the memory card slot can be used for cards up to 2TB.

Advanced security features on this phone make it ideal for anyone that is concerned about the safety of their mobile device. A fingerprint sensor is on board and 3D Face Unlock technology adds further peace of mind. A new innovative security feature is Hand ID. this uses a 3D sensor to scan the patterns and circulatory patterns on your hand.

Another unique feature is the Air Motion control which uses touchless gestures to control certain features of the LG G8 ThinQ 5G. This may seem like a bit of a gimmick but it will be a useful control option if your hands are wet or dirty, for example when using your phone to follow a recipe.

Air Motions allow you to:

  • Control media
  • Answer a call
  • Adjust volume
  • Snooze a timer or alarm
  • Use app shortcuts

Android 9 is on board and this has been enhanced with the LG user interface. Some of the standout features of this interface include a Super Far-Field voice recognition which allows the phone to hear you from up to 5 metres away. A Barge-in feature will allow the phone to hear your Hey Google voice commands even when other things are running such as music or videos.

LG has created amazing sound quality on this device with the Crystal Sound OLED speaker, which uses the whole screen to project your music rather than a small speaker. BoomBox speaker technology provides powerful bass and 3D Stereo DTS:X virtual surround sound is on board too.

A 3,500mAh battery is on board and you get a Quick Charge 3.0 cable included in the box. The phone supports wireless charging, although you will have to buy your own wireless charging pad as this is not provided.

LG G8 ThinQ camera

The LG G8 ThinQ 5G camera is another area that the manufacturer has included unique features into. The dual-lens camera is made up of a 16-megapixel super wide-angle lens and a standard 12-megapixel one. There is an AI Composition option which will recognise up to three people and compose a picture using the design aesthetic rule of thirds. Google Lens works with the camera to search for objects you snap online or provide further information on landmarks.

The 8-megapixel selfie camera is packed with lots of features including a 3D depth sensor for custom lighting and depth effects. Makeup Pro will touch up your lip colour and enhance eyelashes while the selfie light will make sure your shot is illuminated perfectly.

Some of the photography features on board can be used with either the front or back camera and these include:

Studio – change the background colour in a shot
My Avatar – create an emoji of yourself
Spotlight – change the angle of light on your face
Film effect – 17 filter options

Anyone that loves to capture video clips will enjoy the many options on the LG G8 ThinQ 5G. These include 4K videos, Wind Noise Filter and Video Studio which allows you to merge videos and photos with music and themes.

Verdict:

The many unique features of the LG G8 ThinQ 5G will make this phone a great choice for anyone that loves new technology. Air Motion and advanced photo and gaming make this phone ideal for any user and with great style, it’s a phone that looks as good as it performs.
