Smartphone review – Huawei P30 Lite

The P30 range from Huawei has debuted some amazing features and for those that might not want to pay for the flagship, there is an alternative. In my Huawei P30 Lite review, I take a look at the more affordable option in the range of Huawei smartphones.

Huawei P30 Lite design

The new trend in smartphone screens sees the bezels all but disappearing and a small notch or cutout for the camera sensor. The Huawei P30 Lite has a dewdrop notch for the camera so you get much more screen on the device. The phone has a 6.15-inch display with an FHD resolution of 2312 x 1080 pixels. Huawei knows that phones are being used for longer and longer and with this in mind they have enhanced the screen.

The harmful blue light rays that can damage your eyes and lead to eye strain have been reduced. This screen gets the TUV Rheinland Eye Comfort Certification proving that it meets certain standards to keep your eyes safe.

The phone has been constructed using a plastic frame, although it feels like it could be metal, and a 3D curved glass back. This fits perfectly into the hand making it easy to use one-handed. The Huawei P20 Lite is available in Black, White or Blue. It’s slim at 7.4mm thick and lightweight at just 159g.

Huawei P30 Lite features

This may be a more affordable P30 but that doesn’t mean that the Huawei P30 Lite compromises on performance. Under the hood is a Kirin 710 octa-core 2.2GHz processor and 4GB RAM. The GPU TURBO 2.0 technology coupled with all that performance makes this an amazing phone for gaming.

You get a large 128GB of onboard memory and this can be boosted further with a microSD card if you find you need more space.

Android 9.0 is on board and Huawei has added their own touch with their EMUI 9 features. This user interface has some unique things such as Custom Video Ringtones. You can add a short video clip to a contact and it will play whenever they call. AI-powered HiVision provides information when out and about. It can be used to discover information about objects and places, translate menus and signs when travelling or find items that you spot in the shops in online stores to compare prices.

The P30 Lite has a fingerprint sensor which is positioned on the back of the phone. It sits in a natural place so you automatically place your finger in the right spot when picking up the phone.

Huawei knows how important it is for you to be connected as long as possible and with that in mind they have packed a 3,340mAh battery into the P30 Lite. This power pack will deliver around 21 hours of talk time or a whopping 12.2 days of standby. When you do need to recharge the battery the USB Type-C charger is an 18W Quick Charge cable. This will give you a full charge from a flat battery in just 105 minutes.

Huawei P30 Lite Camera

The camera on the Huawei P30 Lite is simply amazing with its triple lens and AI-powered features. The camera consists of a 24-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel Ultra-wide lens for superb landscape shots and a 2-megapixel depth sensor for blur effects.

AI software can recognise up to 22 different categories of objects and scenery. Once the camera establishes what it is looking at the contrast, colour and lighting are adjusted for the best shot. This is done so quickly that you will never miss that perfect photo.

There are a number of shooting modes to choose from:

  • Light Painting
  • 3D Panorama
  • Time-Lapse
  • Slo-mo
  • Night
  • FHD video

The selfie camera is a top-notch 32-megapixel lens with AI technology for capturing your best side every time. Recognising the unique shape of your face, the beauty modifications will complement the contours of your face and create an algorithm that suits your face type.

The Huawei brand is going from strength to strength and the Huawei P30 Lite is another fantastic offering. A long-lasting battery, superb camera and fantastic performance make this a winner and the more affordable price tag compared to the flagship version make it even more appealing.
