Huawei P20 Pro review – highest rated smartphone camera

In my Huawei P20 Pro, I explore the triple camera that DxOMark has rated best for photos and videos

Huawei P20 Pro design

The Huawei P20 Pro fills the front of the phone with the screen and as seen on the iPhone X, there is a notch removed for the camera. The notch on the Huawei is much smaller and you can turn the notch look off by having a black bar appear across the top, making it invisible to see.

The 6.1-inch FullView Display has FHD resolution (2240 x 1080 pixels) and an Always Display feature that shows the time, date, battery and notifications, without having to wake the device.

Huawei has released the P20 Pro in two special colour variants that subtly change colour from one edge to the other. The Pink Gold and Twilight models have the graduated colour scheme, while Black and Midnight Blue have the usual full-colour block paint job.

The Huawei P20 Pro is IP67 certified, so a splash or rain shower will not cause any damage. The phone measures in at just 7.8mm thick and weighs in at 180g.

Huawei P20 Pro Features

The Huawei P20 Pro has a Kirin 970 AI octa-core 2.36GHz processor with 6GB RAM. All this power is on board for handling Augmented Reality apps and AI-assisted photography.

There is an edge-less fingerprint sensor which is used to unlock the phone and performs Smart Navigation. With Smart Navigation you can swipe across the sensor to go home, recent apps or back.

The Huawei P20 Pro offers security and privacy with a PrivateSpace where apps and other items can be completely hidden. The entry to this space is hidden so that nobody will even know that you have a private app on the phone. You can access the space with a different password or with a fingerprint from another one of your fingers.

The Huawei P20 Pro has Google’s Android Oreo on board and Huawei has given this few tweaks with its EMUI user interface. There are many features and enhancements surrounding AI.

If you are a businessperson, you can use the phone to create a desktop experience by connecting it to an external display (you will need a cable for this). This runs just like a desktop so you really can leave your laptop behind.

The P20 Pro has the Dolby Atmos sound system and USB-C earphones, and an adapter in case you want to use standard 3.5mm headphones, are included in the box.

The Huawei P20 Pro has a high capacity 4,000mAh battery. This can be charged quickly with Huawei SuperCharge and the USB Type-C cable, included in the box.

Huawei P20 Pro Leica Triple Camera

The Huawei P20 Pro has a triple camera and this has earned it the highest rank from DxOMark as the number one smartphone camera for both photos and videos. Once you try it, you won’t want to use anything else, the camera is truly impressive.

The three lenses are a 40-megapixel RGB lens, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens and a 8-megapixel telephoto lens.

The wide aperture lens and a new sensor create stunning low light results. AI Image Stabilisation lets get excellent result in Night Mode without the need for a tripod. Artificial lighting tends to have a negative effect on your photos but the but the Huawei P20 Pro handles it like, well a pro.

The Huawei P20 Pro camera features list is extensive, some of the highlights include:

5x Hybrid Zoom

4D Predictive Focus – This uses laser focus, contrast focus, phase focus and deep focus to focus on moving objects for excellent motion shots

3D Panorama – Shoot 360 degrees around a person or shoot a 3D object, you can scroll around the result by tilting the phone

Super Slow Motion – Record video at 960fps and playback a quarter of a seconds action over eight seconds

Master AI – This automatically adjusts the settings and colour balances your photos for 19 different scene types including dog, cat, flowers, blue, food, beach, snow and more

Light Painting

24MP portrait lens – Take high-quality selfies

3D Portrait Lighting – Put studio quality lighting and shading on your face with AI recognising the contours of your features

Verdict:

The performance of the Huawei P20 Pro is excellent whatever you choose to do. Powerful, efficient and well-designed this is a smartphone that is great to use. The camera tips this smartphone over the edge making it stand head and shoulders above the competition.
