HTC Desire 601 review

Impressive features and surprising affordability

Not everyone has a the budget to buy a top-end smartphone but that doesn’t mean that you cannot get a very similar experience in a device that has the same looks.

HTC and the HTC Desire 601 is a prime example of this so let’s discover what you can get if your budget isn’t going to stretch to the heights of the HTC One M8.

HTC Desire 601 design

The striking design is unquestionably HTC and includes a 4.5” qHD display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. This is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and surrounded by a body that is available in either red, black or silver.

Inside there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.4GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM and an internal 8GB memory that can be expanded with a 64GB MicroSD card. The HTC Desire 601 isn’t overly thin at 9.8mm but it is extremely light at 130g.

HTC Desire 601 Features

Powered by Android v4.2 (upgradable to Android v4.4) with HTC Sense the Desire 601 has the benefits of access to the Google Play app store as well as having a few tweaks and additions with HTC designed features.

HTC Desire 601 BlinkFeed home screen

HTC BlinkFeed creates a living home screen where news and social updates of your choice can be displayed without accessing separate apps. Windows Media Audio 9 and Video 9 take care of your multimedia desires whilst extra functionality is provided via GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 4G with cloud storage offered by Dropbox.

HTC Desire 601 Camera

The camera on the HTC Desire 601 is pretty impressive for a budget phone with a 5MP resolution, auto-focus and panorama mode.

Great results under low light conditions are assured by the Smart Flash which has 5 levels of flash automatically set by the distance to the subject. You can also shoot video at 1080p quality and if you want to play around a little you can also shoot slow motion video with variable speed playback.

VideoPic is incorporated into the camera and this allows you to capture high-definition video and take still images at the same time. If you missed the still shot that you really wanted then don’t panic as this feature will also allow you to pull out new still images whilst playing back the video.

Other camera features on the HTC Desire 601 include HTC Zoe, Sequence Shot, Always Smile, Object Removal and Video Highlights where you can create a 30-second mini-movie of an event along with themed music.

HTC Desire 601 verdict

The HTC Desire 601 is a great smartphone choice for those on a budget and the camera features are particularly pleasing. The 2100mAh battery isn’t the biggest on the market but there should be enough juice available for heavy users to get through the day no matter whether that usage is calling, browsing the internet or playing videos or music.
