Google Pixel 3a Review

The Pixel smartphone range from Google has gained in popularity over the years and if you are thinking of moving over to this brand, this phone could be the perfect introduction. The Google Pixel 3a has a lower cost than the Pixel 3 but still boasts plenty of those features that these Google phones have become known for. In my Google Pixel 3a review, I take a look at what you get for your money.

Google Pixel 3a design

The Google Pixel 3a boasts a 5.6-inch display with an FHD+ resolution of 2,220 x 1,080 pixels. Always-on technology gives you important information on the screen without having to keep waking up the device. The screen is superb for watching videos with superb contrast, vibrant colour range, and deep blacks.

The phone has a thin body made from polycarbonate measuring 8.2mm and weighs in at just 147g. There is a choice of colours with Just Black, Purple-ish and Clearly White.

Google Pixel 3a features

Under the hood, the Google Pixel 3a has Snapdragon 670 2.0 GHzz processor and 4GB RAM. While this may be a slight drop compared to the Google Pixel 3, the performance difference is minimal. To enhance performance further Google has added the Android Sensor Hub. A coprocessor handles the data from the sensors leaving the main processor to handle the more demanding tasks.

There is a fingerprint sensor in the usual back position on the Google Pixel 3a and the Titan M security chip adds even more protection for your data. There is 64GB of onboard memory and although there isn’t a microSD card slot, Google Drive and Google Photos offer cloud storage to help store your files and images.

Android 9 is on board and this gives you Google Assistant which can be activated with a simple squeeze of the phone using the Active Edge feature. As this phone is made by Google you are guaranteed to get OS and security updates for Android for the next 3 years.

A boost to Google Maps sees the use of AR to help you navigate the world around you. You will now see the directions overlaid on the camera image of what you are actually looking at. As you approach junctions the AR feature will place large arrows to let you know which way you need to go.

A 3,000mAh battery provides plenty of power for all-day use and can last up to 30 hours. Adaptive Battery management will recognise apps you use the most and reduce power to less frequently used features. An 18W charger is included giving you a super quick charge in just 15 minutes for 7 hours of battery power.

Google Pixel 3a camera

The camera on the Google Pixel 3a is a 12.2-megapixel lens and it includes the new Night Sight feature. Capture amazing details, colour, and clarity in your low light shots without having to use the flash. Portrait Mode includes a depth editing option so you can blur parts of the image. Another feature is Colour Pop which can reduce the background down to black and white while keeping the main subject in colour.

Some of the camera features include:

  • Top Shot
  • HDR+
  • 4K video recording
  • Google Lens
  • Super Res Zoom
  • Motion Auto-Focus

There is an 8-megapixel selfie camera and with unlimited storage on Google Photos, you can snap away to your heart’s content with the Google Pixel 3a.

The Google Pixel 3a is the perfect choice if you want a Pixel phone at a lower price. The superb camera and Android performance make this phone an excellent choice for any smartphone user.
