Battle of the Androids: HTC One M8 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

The battle to be crownedthe best Android phone of 2014 is hotting up with the HTC One M8 duking it out with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and here we pit these two smartphone giants against each other to see how the stats compare to each other.

Display and Design

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch 1080p AMOLED display whilst the HTC One M8 has a 5-inch touchscreen, the slight difference in size is not discernible enough to make much of a difference here. Both screens perform very well when playing video or when browsing so each of these top Android smartphones do well.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has not strayed much from previous versions with the same plastic chassis however the back cover has a perforated design for better grip. The HTC One M8 is built from a single piece of metal, as before, and with the slightly more rounded edges the design of this handset is very beautiful making it stand out above the Samsung Galaxy S5.

HTC One M8 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 specifications

Many of the features of both the phones offer up similar specifications with Android KitKat on board and 16/32GB variants and an SD card slot for cards up to 128GB. Each has a quad-core processor with the Galaxy S5 plumping for the slightly more powerful 2.5GHz compared to the 2.3GHz processor on the HTC One M8. Both processors deliver up plenty of power for multitasking and running the Android 4.4 OS so the difference is readily apparent.

The audio quality on both phones is very good but the HTC One M8 has two front facing stereo speakers, a dedicated amplifier and HTC BoomSound so listening to your music out loud on this phone outperforms the S5.

The camera on each of these phones is impressive in its own right with Samsung and HTC going down different roads when it comes to mobile imaging.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is packing a 16-megapixel camera and you get a lot of the technology that the manufacturers use in their dedicated compact cameras. The lens can fire up in 0.3 seconds so you won’t miss the shot and it can record 4k video which is the next step in HD video.

The HTC One M8 has the same Ultrapixel camera as seen on the predecessor but HTC go one step further with a dual camera setup. This second lens captures incredible depth allowing you to do some amazing post editing to your pictures as well as adding 3D effects and to blur different areas of the shot.

When stacked up next to each other both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8 would be a fantastic choice for even the most demanding smartphone user so how do you choose? If mobile music is important to you then the HTC One M8 is the way to go but if you want a high megapixel camera and features like S Voice and S Health then the Galaxy S5 is the one for you. I personally think if a phone has been designed to work beautifully it should look the part too so the HTC One M8 takes the top spot for me.
