Apple Patent’s Privacy Screen

Several sources have dug up an Apple patent filing from 2009 for a screen with adjustable viewing angles. If you were to compare the display on an iPhone with the display from a 1990’s lap top, one of the differences you’d notice is that you have to be at almost exactly 90 degrees in front of the screen to view it. Modern screens have a much wider viewing angle which is great for showing your friends pictures in the pub but not so great if your viewing sensitive documents or doing your banking.

Apple’s patent describes a method for varying the viewing angle on an LCD display, allowing users the best of both worlds, wide angle for showing off how cool your iPad is, narrow angle for looking at naked ladies your bank balance on the bus.

There’s no word from Apple on when or even if this technology will make it in to production.
