Apple iPhone 4S

It might not be what we were all expecting from Apple but you have got to hand it to them, they have re-designed the entire internal functionality and features of the original iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S looks mostly the same as its predecessor from the outside but delivers a whole new experience from the inside. Firstly the fast dual-core A5 processor has made an entry into the smartphone world that apparently boosts graphics performance by up to 7x. This will show improved performance in both the functionality of the phone and the speed. The antenna issue has been revamped and been connected to a dual mode GSM radio that will eliminate the signal issue many consumers had with the handset. Faster speeds will also be noticed up to 14.4Mbps on HSPA+. With the improvements of the connectivity options on-board the handset, users will notice up to 2x faster data connection improving the overall experience of surfing the net or downloading applications and games.

The second feature Apple was pleased to announce was the improved camera. Tim Cook confidently claimed “To many customers this will be the best still camera they’ve ever owned and the best video camera they’ve ever owned”.

The 8-megapixel camera has a backside illuminated CMOS sensor for better low-light performance. The improved camera also extends the video performance, which can record at full 1080p HD. Image stabilisation and face detection features have been enhanced to provide excellent quality photos. The camera is faster than most smartphones and even some digital cameras out there, with only half a second interval between shots.

The battery life has also been improved on the smartphone, to make it run for longer. It gives users up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G, 10 hours of continuous video playback, 40 hours of music playback and web browsing at around 6 hours. However, using Wi-Fi will give users around about 9 hours.

Another cool addition to the iPhone 4S is the voice control feature. It allows users to enter text, check the weather, get directions or perform web searches by talking into the mic. Apart from these improvements, the new iOS 5 will bring about 200 other new features including a notification centre, iMessage, Newsstand, Reminders, Twitter integration and a whole new web browsing experience with the improved Safari. Other features will include the anticipated iCloud, Wi-Fi sync and a pc free iPhone experience.

iOS 5 is expected to be released on the 12th of October while pre-orders for the iPhone 4S will start taking place on the 7th of October, shipped out from the 14th of October. The smartphone will be available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions and as the previous models available in either black or white.

Overall this is probably not what was expected from Apple but after a little thought, it’s nice to have a refreshed iPhone in hand. Faster processor, better camera, improved battery life, enhanced connectivity options and the addition of some cool features is an overview recap of what users should expect with the iPhone 4S.
