Amazon Phone Rumour Roundup – Specifications and Release date

Amazon has seen big success with their e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet range and with many rumours about a foray into the smartphone market we take a look at what we can expect from the Amazon smartphone and can they really compete with the best smartphones of 2014 such as the Galaxy S5?

Amazon Phone Specifications

There has been much talk about what features will make it on to the Amazon smartphone and a number of leaked images claiming to be said phone give us a peak at what might be. The name is still unknown with a codename of Duke being bandied about or could it simply be the Amazon phone? With the Kindle brand having a strong presence it is just as likely to be the Kindle Phone so we shall have to wait for the official unveil before we know.

Many of the rumours surrounding the screen size of the handset have it pegged at a 720p 4.7-inch display and one of the things everyone is abuzz about is the 5 cameras on the front. That’s right, 5! or possibly 4….. So why so many? It is said these cameras will create a 3D effect with a floating display giving a holographic effect from all angles using the cameras to track your eye movements – pretty nifty if true.

The leaked image as seen on the BGR website doesn’t give much away but it is expected that the phone will have 2GB RAM and an unknown spec Snapdragon processor.

A number of rumours have been circulating as to who will actually make the phone for Amazon, so will the Amazon phone be made by HTC? HTC has stepped in to produce phones for other companies before such as the Facebook phone, but whether they will make the Kindle phone is as yet unknown.

Foxconn is also in the running to make the Amazon phone and as they produce the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Paperwhite they could be a natural choice for a manufacturing partner.

There is also speculation that Amazon may not just release one handset but two, with the top-end device offering up the 3D display effects and a cheaper version without the holographic display.

Amazon acquired a voice search engine some time ago so we can expect something similar to Siri on board the Amazon smartphone, which would make sense for them to compete with all the other smartphones out there with voice assistants.

The operating system on the Kindle phone is also up for debate with a highly modified Amazon-esque Android OS on board to a possible Windows OS so again this is a wait and see aspect of the Amazon smartphone.

Amazon Phone Release date

The rumours about Amazon moving into the smartphone market have been doing the rounds for a couple of years now and it was expected we would see the device by the end of Q2 this year but a release in late summer is more likely on the cards due to speculated manufacturing issues.
