Alcatel 3L review

Alcatel has always offered phones that deliver good experience while offering affordability. In my Alcatel 3L review I take a look at an affordable smartphone with a few nice surprises.

Alcatel 3L design

The overall design of the Alcatel 3L is not particularly striking, but at around £130 you aren’t going to get any amazing details. You do get a FullView display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, this means the phone is slimmer but has a longer screen. You can see more rows of text on a website or when watching videos in landscape mode you get more of a widescreen look.

Alcatel has added a little touch to the phone with 2.5D curved glass and a radial effect on the back cover. This does make it look a bit more premium than the price tag suggests.

The phone weighs in at 145g and measures 8.5mm so it is actually quite lightweight and slim.

Alcatel 3L features

The 5.5-inch HD+ display performs really well when web browsing or playing games. The phone has a quad-core processor and 2GB RAM on board. This is certainly not the most powerful option available but the phone handles tasks well with minimal lag.

A standout feature on this budget phone is Face Key, a facial recognition software. This uses 106 focal points on your face to determine it’s you before unlocking the phone. It works pretty fast at 0.5 seconds and even works up to a 30-degree angle.

Alcatel has added some additional features to the usual Google offering. These are called Alcatel Joy features and include Joy Lock screen, Dynamic icons and Joy Touch for quick access to apps.

You can use the App Cloner to create two apps for social networks such as Facebook if you have multiple accounts. The phone includes Private Mode for keeping certain files protected and if performance becomes an issue you can use the DuraSpeed Boost app to improve the phone speed.

If you love listening to music on your mobile then you will love the 1 watt speak with an amplifier. This is one of the best phones for playing music I have tried.

The battery worked pretty well as I got a full day of mixed use with some juice to spare. The battery is a 3,000mAh power pack and it can be fully recharged in under 4 hours.

Alcatel 3L camera

The camera on the Alcatel is a 13-megapixel lens which worked really well in different lights. You can capture 1080p video or choose from different shooting modes such as Night Mode, Burst Shot and Panorama.

You can create Time Lapse videos or apply Live Filters for fun touches to your photos. The selfie camera is a 5-megapixel lens with an 84-degree field of view. This is great for group selfies or snapping a self-portrait in beautiful surroundings.

The price tag on the Alcatel 3L is certainly attractive and with a great range of essential features, you get a great phone for the price. The loudspeaker, good battery life and decent camera package make this the perfect phone for a first smartphone or budget choice.
