Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro review

The Xiaomi brand has been newly introduced to the UK market and with a number of models already available, this manufacturer is coming strong straight out of the gate. In my Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro review, I take a look at one of their top smartphones.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro design

The design of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro stands up against some of the best smartphones of 2018. The large 6.21-inch AMOLED FHD+ screen is impressive. It’s actually made by Samsung so you know you are getting good screen technology. There is an Always-On mode so you can see a snapshot of information without waking the device.

The phone feels ultra-thin and has a curved edge and premium feel that is very pleasing. Weighing in at 177g and measuring 7.6mm thick this is a slim and light device. The phone is available in a Transparent Titanium colour. This variant gives you a glimpse of the inner workings on the back of the phone for a unique touch.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro features

This Xiaomi smartphone is packed with lots of high-end goodies with a Snapdragon 845 AI processor and 8GB RAN. Gamers will love this phone and any task is handled easily.

Security features include an advanced IR Face Unlock that can recognise your face even when it’s dark. The fingerprint sensor is built into the display. The sensor is activated when it detects pressure on the display, traditional fingerprint sensors are always scanning so this type saves power.

Android 8.1 is on board and Xiaomi has enhanced this with their MIUI interface. As well as getting all the familiar Google apps you can create your own voice commands with the UI. Other features of the MIUI include a special driving mode and a customisable notification centre.

Dual frequency GPS is on board, this type of advanced GPS means you will be more likely to keep a signal in cities as other GPS systems can drop here.

The battery on board is a 3,000mAh unit. While this may not be as bit a capcity as other smartphones on the market, you still get plenty of use between charges. An 18W QuickCharge cable is included so you can boost the battery power in quick time.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro camera

Xiaomi has again reached out to another manufacturer for the camera component. The Sony Dual AI camera uses a 12-megapixel wide-angle and 12-megapixel telephoto lens. With Dual Pixel technology the camera can make the most of the available light for excellent night shots.

The camera features include:

AI Scene detection for up to 206 different scenery types
AI Studio lighting
AI Portrait Mode with bokeh effects
AI Short Video editing

The selfie camera is a top-end 20-megapixel lens and includes 3D Beauty Mode which can enhance lips, eyelashes and more in real time.

Verdict:

This smartphone is an excellent choice for anyone wanting flagship technology with a lower price tag. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro has a superb display, powerful processor and impressive camera giving all you could want from the latest smartphones on the market.
