Samsung Galaxy gets a boost.

The powerful Galaxy S already had a pretty impressive spec but Samsung have decided to add a few more features onto this super smartphone to make it a real contender in the smart phone world including a full QWERTY keyboard in the form of the Galaxy Q.

Obviously putting a QWERTY keyboard on the bottom of this phone means that the screen size has been decreased a bit from 4 inches to 3 but it is still a super AMOLED touch screen, displaying the phones features superbly. Other impressive features to that are expected to come out of the Galaxy Q include an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recorder as well as a 1.3 megapixel video call camera. So far so good!

Other than that the Galaxy Q is fairly similar to the Galaxy S, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing with a 1GHz Processor, TouchWiz interface, full Google package, 3G HSDPA, media player and WiFi.

For people who like QWERTY phones the Galaxy Q could be a real hit for Samsung. No news on a release date yet but we are expecting it to hit the shelve before Christmas.

Swype Technology – The Next Generation

There comes a time when tapping away at a QWERTY keyboard is too much like hard work, so the geniuses that brought us T9 predictive text are now introducing Swype technology to the mass market. Instead of pressing individual letters on the keyboard, users just drag their fingers from one letter to another in a fluid motion and the computer works it out from there.

It doesn’t even have to be that precise as the software can work out what you are trying to type. In demonstrations, hurdles like capitals and double letters are overcome by pausing or doing a squiggle, while spacing and punctuation are automatic.

Swype’s inventor Cliff Kushler said the technology could have an enormous impact and be used anywhere people have to use a keyboard, such as video games, sat-nav devices and ticket machines. ‘We’ve squeezed the desktop computer, complete with keyboard and mouse, into something that fits in a pocket,’ he said.

Obviously Swype technology has no taken over yet but the Samsung Galaxy S already has the technology and another 50 models worldwide are set to feature it by the end of the year.

Won Park, director of United States technology sourcing at Samsung said: ‘It could become the de facto standard for tablets, next-generation TVs or next-generation remote controls. It has tremendous potential.’

Nokia becomes Top Dog once again.

nokiaMobile phone manufacturer Nokia was once a very clear leader in the mobile phone world but soon became part of a very varied and exciting crowd. With a few strong phones including the N900 and N97 Nokia is now in poll position and stretched its lead by around 9 percentage points recently from second placed Samsung.

In the two months before Christmas Samsung held its place firmly at number one and topped the sales chart with around 33% market share the week before Christmas. This lead has since seen a dramatic 11% drop in market share leaving Nokia with a 30% share and consumer friendly phones X3 and X6 proving popular.

Market researcher GfK have measured the Weekly sales and have seen 3rd placed Sony Ericsson take a 3% loss even after the launch of the Aino, Satio and more recent Vivaz but has seen RIM’s BlackBerry over-take LG with an 11% share and an increased demand for business phones in the mass market.

Here at Mobiles Please we think it is great to see Nokia using innovative and interesting ideas giving users a range of fantastic devices and keeping competition high between all the manufacturers.
