Smartphone review: Huawei Y9 (2019)

The camera technology on smartphones has been evolving at a fast pace and in my Huawei Y9 (2019) review I take a look at a smartphone that packs the latest AI camera features.

Huawei Y9 (2019) design

This latest smartphone from Huawei has an impressive 6.5-inch FullView Display. The FullView moniker refers to the 19.5:9 aspect ratio which gives you more screen and fewer bezels. This makes for more display without making the device too big.

The phone is slim at just 8.1mm and weighing in at 173g, it feels comfortable to hold with one hand. The phone is available in Sapphire Blue, Midnight Black or Aurora Purple. The 3D arc design gives the phone a curvature for a natural fit in the palm as well as giving the colour an iridescent quality.

Huawei Y9 (2019) Features

The Huawei Y9 (2019) is an Android smartphone and this OS works with EMUI 8.2 from Huawei to create an excellent user experience. Lots of great apps are included such as YouTube and Chrome and of course you can head over to Google Play for a huge choice of downloadable apps and content.

The phone can be acquired with either a 64GB memory and 4GB RAM or a beefier 6GB RAM model with 128GB of onboard memory.

Huawei has added a fingerprint sensor on the back and with the Kirin Octa-core processor, you get 30% less power consumption and 2x more GPU efficiency compared to the old model.

Some of the standout features of the Huawei Mate Y9 (2019) use AI technology to enhance everything from the display to conversation quality. Talkeasy AI can detect noise and the environment you are in and uses Automotive Enhancement to control volume and adapts sound to keep the call clear.

Histen5.0 sound creates surround sound and delivers an impressive base for excellent music playback. The Y9 (2019) includes Party Mode so you can use friends compatible devices to create a sound system across mutliple smartphones.

Another feature I found great was Eye Comfort Mode, this has been certified by TUV Rheinland. This is a recognised body in the field of mobile phone display accreditation for eye protection. The smartphone will be able to detect low light and launch Eye Comfort Mode to reduce blue light damage and filter out blue light frequencies.

The battery is one of the more important features on smartphones these days. Huawei has gone for a big 4,00mAH powerhouse so you get lots of use. The battery delivers up to 9 hours of gaming or 65 hours of music playback. The power consumption is super-efficient thanks to the advanced processor and if you start to run low, AI technology will manage power until you can get to a power source.

Huawei Y9 (2019) camera

The camera technology on the Huawei Y9 (2019) is one of the best things on this device. You get dual cameras on the front and back and both of these use AI technology. The front camera is a 16MP + 2MP and on the back, you get 13MP + 2MP. The trend of putting better tech on the front of smartphones is mainly due to the popularity of taking selfies.

Both cameras deliver impressive images and as they use AI technology, they can recognise a scene or object and make sure the settings are perfect for getting the right shot.

The rear camera includes AI stabilisation and the sensor lets in 50% more light. It can also use a 6-second exposure to reduce noise in the image. This means you can capture beautiful night shots.

The front camera has advanced 3D Lighting to create professional studio shots and the beauty algorithm can be used to tweak elements of your appearance.

Verdict:

The Huawei Y9 (2019) takes huge steps when it comes to feature updates compared to the previous model. If you love mobile photography and want a phone that performs, this is the one for you.
