The Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 features a 5.2-inch HD display that sits within the metal housing and the camera module does not stick out on the back so you get a seamless look and feel. The phone weighs 160g and is 8mm thick which is around average for phones in this range.

 

The AMOLED display includes Always On technology so you get to see notifications and the time without the need to wake the phone, this helps save on battery power.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 has the Android 7.1 OS on board so there are plenty of familiar apps as well as a few features Samsung has added such as the S Health app. The split screen allows you to have two apps on the screen at the same time and Game Launcher keeps your games in one place.

 

The 1.6GHz octacore processor and 2GB RAM offer a decent experience when gaming or web browsing and the memory can be boosted with a microSD card of up to 256GB.

 

The position of the speaker is on the side of the Galaxy J5 2017 which allows you to enjoy clear audio when placing the phone down on a surface.

There is a fingerprint sensor for security and it can be used with the Secure Folder feature to create a private folder for certain files, apps or images.

 

The phone has a Blue light filter to reduce eye strain when using the device in the evening and you can adjust the times the filter is applied to fit with your location.

 

The Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 has a 3,000mAh battery with stats of up to 83 hours of music or 14 hours of web browsing as well as up to 21 hours of talk time.

The rear camera on the Galaxy J5 2017 is a 13-megapixel lens with a f/1.7 aperture which will capture more of the available light for good photos on poor lighting.

 

The camera can be launched with a double-tap of the Home Key and the shutter button can be moved around the screen for easier one-handed use. There are plenty of shooting options to choose from including panorama, night mode, sports mode and sound & shot. There is a new post-editing features that allows you to brighten faces and make them clearer by using the on-screen button.

 

The selfie camera takes a big step up on the J5 when compared to last years phone as you now get a 13-megapixel camera on the front instead of a 5-megapixel one.

The phone has a flash for lighting your selfies and gesture shot allows you to snap a photo by showing the lens your palm. There is a wide-shot option for getting groups into the shot and you can edit faces for finishing touches before posting the final result.

Verdict:

The Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 has seen improvements across the board with a faster processor, more memory, bigger battery and a big jump up on the selfie camera. If you have last years model of the J5 then this is a big upgrade and this phone performs well across all elements making it a great choice.
