In our Microsoft Lumia 435 preview we see the tech giant continue to knock out smartphones for the budget end of the market. The spec sees the cheapest components used yet the Microsoft Windows Phone software adds plenty of functionality proving that cheap can be cheerful!
Microsoft Lumia 435 design
This Microsoft phone does have character with a choice of brightly coloured variants which in turn can have their back casings swapped as desired. Weighing only 134g this phone is light but there is plenty to give a secure grip in the hand thanks to its 11.7mm thick body.
The 4-inch display is pretty much as small as you can find today on a smartphone yet the 480 x 800 pixel resolution offers plenty enough clarity for gaming and browsing the internet over Wi-Fi or 3.5G.
The home screen design follows that as seen before with Windows Phone 8.1 placing live tiles on the home screen which can be grouped into live folders and have a background image applied to them.
The design also includes an 8GB internal memory that can be expanded upon with up to a 128GB memory card. A dual-core processor keeps things moving and for a phone in this pricing bracket it seems like a good fit.
Microsoft Lumia 435 camera
The Microsoft Lumia 435 camera is set at 2-megapixels and whilst quality will be limited when enlarged on a laptop or PC it is just enough for showing off those special moments on the Lumia 435 itself. On the front side there is a VGA camera for taking a selfie or making Skype video calls.
Several camera apps are pre-installed and these include Lumia Refocus for artistically bringing elements in the photo in or out of focus. You also get Living Images, Lumia Selfie enhancements, the Lumia Storyteller and Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac.
Microsoft Lumia 435 features
The built-in features are numerous but if you don’t see your favourite app then you will probably find it available as a download in the Windows Phone app store. As you explore this budget Microsoft phone you find a series of Xbox features including Xbox Music, the Xbox Music Store and the Xbox Live Hub.
You can stream music through the MixRadio and by giving tracks a thumbs up or a thumbs down the app learns what music you like and tailors music mixes to match the type of music you love.
Practical features and tools include global GPS voice navigation with free maps and free offline maps. The Cortana digital assistant can help you find information or prompt you with reminders while the Word Flow keyboard takes the strain out of writing longer messages or text.
Microsoft Office is also included enabling you to open, edit and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. These can be made available to all of your devices by using the 15GB of OneDrive online storage and if you activate the Camera Roll backup feature then you get a further 15GB of cloud storage.
Microsoft Lumia 435 verdict
The Microsoft Lumia 435 is certainly not a premium or mid-range smartphone but if you are looking for a very affordable phone then you could pick a lot worse.
