HTC U12+ Review

HTC has previously taken on the big guys at the top of the smartphone world. After a slip down the rankings and a drop in popularity, the manufacturer is looking to make a come back with their latest phone. In my HTC U12+ review I take a look at the latest flagship to see if it can compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple.

HTC U12+ Design

The phone is incredibly sleek and HTC has added a unique look to one of the colour variants. The Translucent Blue HTC U12+ reveals some of the phones inner workings. This is certainly different and actually looks pretty good. If you are not a fan of it you can opt for a more traditional look in either Flame Red or Ceramic Black.

The display is a big 6-inch Quad HD screen and with super-slim bezels, this phone is pretty much all screen. The display is one of the best I have seen with a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels.

HTC U12+ Features

The overall performance of the HTC U12+ is impressive thanks to the Snapdragon 2.8GHz octa-core processor and 6GB RAM. This means you get a lag-free performance in even the most demanding apps, it was great to use for any task.

The phone is IP68 certified and includes a good 64GB of onboard space along with the option to boost it with a microSD card if necessary.

There is a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone and Face Unlock is on board too.

The phone is an Android Oreo device and HTC has confirmed that it will be upgradeable to Android P when the update rolls out. The Android experience is bolstered with some extras from HTC using their Edhe Sense 2 technology. This detects when you squeeze the phone or interact with it in other ways to complete tasks. Some features include:

  • Squeeze – Activate camera shutter or launch Google Assistant
  • Hold – Keeps the screen in the same orientation and won’t dim
  • Double Tap – A mini screen appears to use with just your thumb

HTC has always been good with the audio features on their phones and the new U12+ continues with this tradition. HTC BoomSound uses a separate woofer and tweeter and you get USonic Earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation. This is a great phone for music fans.

The battery is a decent 3,500mAh power pack and is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0. HTC has given you a bonus here by including a Quick Charge 3.0 charger in with the phone. This is something you would normally have to buy separately and it delivers a 50% charge in a quick 30 minutes.

HTC U12+ Camera features

The camera is one of the standout features of this phone with a dual camera on both the front and back. This phone currently has the highest score from DxOMark making it the highest rated dual camera smartphone. The camera on the back consists of a 16-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel wide angle camera. This package delivers amazing photos and includes features such as UltraSpeed Autofocus 2 and 10x digital zoom.

The front camera uses two 8-megapixel lenses to capture selfies and group shots. Both cameras include bokeh effects and HDR Boost 2 for excellent low-light capture. There are also a number of AR Stickers that can be placed over images and videos in real time.

Video quality is top notch too with slow motion at 240 frames per second in HD quality. The camera can capture 4K video and Auto Zoom allows you to smoothly zoom into an object during recording.

Verdict:

This feels like the HTC handsets of old when they were at the top of their game. The manufacturer has really created an impressive handset with every element delivering big. The camera is just amazing and the performance is among the best out there. If you are considering a new handset at the moment, this one is a must!
