Hands on with the Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S

The Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S reaks of flagship but at an affordable price and I was pretty impressed by what is on offer.

Fitting firmly into the mini-sized bracket of the smartphone market the Idol 2 Mini S holds many surprises and you can discover them in my hands-on review with the Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S design

The design is pretty sleek and a combination of toughened black crystal Dragontrail Glass, metallic edging, diamond cut effect and oleophobic coating which prevents fingerprint smudges present a device that looks cutting edge.

A 4.5” IPS display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels at 245 pixels per inch delivers a stunning canvass for enjoying your photos, videos and media and there is no noticeable lag time thanks to a quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB RAM.

Inside we find a 4GB memory that can be expanded with a 32GB MicroSD card. The Idol Mini S is impressively slim at 8.5mm and weighs in at only 116 grams. Overall we see an exceptional build quality for a phone at this price tag.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S features

Powered by the Android v4.3 operating system consumers are rewarded with a familiar experience that can be infinitely expanded upon with new app downloads from the Google Play app store.

The experience is further improved with a clever one finger zoom system where you need only to swipe one finger across the screen to zoom in and out, which is perfect for viewing web pages via 4G or Wi-Fi.

The Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S also features GPS for navigation and location based services, HD stereo sound and a document viewer for opening email attachments.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S camera

Once again, for its price tag the inclusion of an 8MP camera is a generous offering and we find it feature rich with autofocus, panorama mode, night mode, burst mode and sport mode. There is also a photo viewer and editor included as well.

This smartphone also has the popular HDR feature which takes multiple shots and various exposures to combine the best bits from each into one final photographic result. HDR works great for situations where there is both bright and dark areas in the shot such as in landscape scenes where the sky is significantly brighter than the land.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S HD stereo sound

Video can be recorded at a quality of 1080p at 30 frames per second and video stabilisation makes getting a decent result easy. On the front we find a 2MP camera for making video calls or taking a selfie.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S battery

The 2000mAh battery on the Idol 2 Mini S is pretty powerful and I found that a full days usage was achievable under a mixed usage scenario.

Up to 400 hours of standby can be achieved for light users and if you love your music then 35 hours of continuous audio output should delight. It is also worth noting that it only takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery.

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S verdict

At a price tag of only £169 the Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S should be extremely popular and it completely deserves to be. Combine the flexibility of the Android OS, premium design and high-quality camera and a success story here is surely about to materialise.
