Essential PH-1 Review – new phone from co-creator of Android

The Essential brand may not be a name that you are familiar with but this American company was created by the co-creator of Android, Andy Rubin, so this is one to keep an eye on. In my Essential PH-1 review I take a look at this new smartphone from the Essential brand.

Essential PH-1 Design

The Essential PH-1 has a superb design which feels like good quality and the phone has a unique look thanks to the edge-to-edge display that adorns the front fascia all the way to the top with just a small notch taken out for the camera.

The display is a huge 5.7-inch QHD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1312 pixels and the brightness can be turned up to 500nits so the performance when outside is excellent.

The phone is made from premium materials including titanium which has been used on the body instead of aluminium making this phone tough. The rear of the phone is covered with a smooth ceramic finish that is sleek and clean with no logos adding to the uniqueness of the overall design. The phone is only 7.8mm thick but those tougher materials seem to have added to the weight as it comes in at 185g which is a little on the heavy side but I think this adds to the quality feel.

Features of the Essential PH-1

The Essential PH-1 has a 2.45GHz octacore processor under the hood and this processor has been used on many recently released flagships so the performance is excellent. There is 4GB RAM on board and there are four microphones and stereo speakers so call and audio quality is great on this phone.

The phone has a big 128GB memory so you can easily transfer data from your old phone with room for plenty more and there is a fingerprint sensor included for securing the device.

The Essential PH-1 is all about connectivity with magnetic connectors on board which can be used for connecting accessories. These can be used to connect a 360-degree camera, chargers, dongles and various other accessories that are available to order.

The phone has Android 7.1 on board and the USB Type-C connector while the huge 3040mAh battery is compatible with fast charging, the fast charging cable is included in the box which is a bonus you don’t see on many phones.

Essential PH-1 camera

The camera package on this phone is impressive in every way from the world’s thinnest dual camera system to the selfie camera that can capture 4K video.

The 13-megapixel rear dual camera setup uses the two lenses independently with one capturing a black and white image and the other being an RGB lens. The ability to capture 200% more light that standard camera configurations make this dual camera capture incredible detail. The dual images are combined to create one highly detailed shot and with so much detail captured post editing options are superb.

The camera has Hybrid Autofocus with Phase Detect, IR Laser Assist Focus and excellent low-light performance.

The 8-megapixel selfie camera delivers superb photos and with both cameras being able to capture 4K video you can capture the world around you with amazing detail and clarity.

Verdict:

As you would expect from one of the creators of Android this phone is pretty impressive. The brand may not be well known but the device can easily compete with the flagship models of the more established brands in the market. The screen is simply fantastic and the innovative camera delivered impressive photos and videos.
