Caterpillar CAT S50 – Tough and Smart!

Builders phone

The Caterpillar CAT S50 sees tough phones take a leap forward in technology and today we really can call the CAT S50 a smartphone.

In fact as you read my CAT S50 review you will soon realise that extreme sports enthusiasts such as those who partake in mountain biking or down hill skiing will be lusting over this phone, which traditionally has been marketed as the builders phone.

CAT S50 design – Is it indestructible?

This is an interesting question and as far as phone tech goes this is as indestructible as it gets. Built to military specs (810G) and IP67 certified for resistance to dust, water, solar radiation and thermal shock the CAT S50 can be taken into environments where the temperature may drop to -25 or rise to 55 degrees C or be dropped onto concrete.

The 4.7-inch shatter proof and scratch resistant display has a high-definition resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels which equates to 312 pixels per inch. You can use the touch sensitive display with wet fingers making it perfect for anyone who works or plays in the elements.

It is hugely surprising to pick up the CAT S50 as it is as light as other modern smartphone at 185 grams and at 12.6mm thick it is nowhere near as chunky as these phones used to be.

You can buy the CAT S50 in either forest or slate and I would be happy with either colour as I just cannot get enough of the Caterpillar design which is edgy & sharp and will have every other on-site worker or thrill-seeking sports person asking about it.

Under the covers we find an 8GB internal memory and card slot (up to 64GB) and a 2,630mAh battery that can last for up to 33 days in standby or keep the conversation going for up to 16 hours.

CAT S50 features – Is it a true smartphone?

Well it really is and it would line up perfectly well next to any mid-range smartphone on the market. To back this up I can confirm that a powerful 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB RAM powers the CAT S50 and you will be able to enjoy Wi-Fi or 4G internet access or navigate with GPS and the built in compass.

CAT S50 design

The operating system is Android KitKat v4.4 so you have access to over 1.2 million apps in Google Play. Caterpillar has also created a CAT Phone App Store of its own where you will find 1,000 hand-picked apps such as Skype, Endomondo and CHECKD. So make life easy for yourself and use this to avoid a bucket load of low-quality and naff apps that confuse the picture in the Google Play Store (sorry Android!).

CAT S50 features

To compliment its outside traits the CAT S50 has Technical GRAMMY Award winning Waves MaxxAudio sound enhancements so you can make a call or watch a video in almost any location and even when a gale is blowing.

CAT S50 camera – Can I leave my digital camera behind?

Indeed I think you can. An 8MP camera on a builders phone is unheard of and you can enjoy a series of useful features such as a LED flash, geo-tagging, photo and video editing, video recording at 1080p (30 frames per second) and video calling with the forward facing camera.

CAT S50 verdict

The Caterpillar CAT S50 is due to be released soon and if I was a builder, on-site worker or extreme sports enthusiast then I would be snapping one up on release day!
