The Nokia X6 gets a new paintjob!

The popularity of the Nokia X6 keeps on growing with the introduction of this great phone in blue. Music is at the heart of the X6 and great sound quality is on offer through stereo speakers or your own headphones connected to the universal 3.5mm audio jack. In addition to the music/video player there is also a stereo FM radio with RDS.

The other area in which the Nokia X6 excels is in the camera department, Carl Zeiss optics give a quality feel to your pictures and auto-focus ensures blurry images are a thing of the past. The X6 also has the edge on its competition with a video recorder that captures images at 30 frames per second in either landscape or portrait views.

Nokia can’t be praised enough for the X6 as they have hit the nail on the head when it comes to offering users what they really want. The 8GB memory is very generous and the new blue colour scheme makes this one stand out in a crowd.

Blackberry ups the ante with the Curve 9300 and Torch 9800

This week Blackberry has officially announced two new handsets that are set to join their popular line up of business styled smartphones. The beauty of these two new gems is the inclusion of the new Blackberry 6 operating system and a range of entertaining apps that make these handsets well suited for those who only want one device that can cover work and play.

The Blackberry Curve 9300 – In the typical style of Blackberry phones we see a compact QWERTY keyboard nestled below the display and with the usual messaging formats including push email and Blackberry Messenger for instant messaging the keyboard should get plenty of use.

The Curve 9300 can also access Blackberry Application World for an almost endless choice of downloads to tailor the phone to your needs and the 3G connection ensures downloading is quick and painless. If your job requires venturing out of the office then you have the security of GPS and Blackberry Maps to help take the stress out of navigating Britains busy roads.

On the entertainment side, the Curve offers a media player that not only handles music and video but also allows you to sync the handset with the iTunes app. Entering the music playback mode transforms the Curve into a music player and dedicated control buttons ensure that navigation of your favourite playlist is straightforward.

The Blackberry Torch 9800 – This model takes on the form of a full touchscreen handset with the benefit of a slide-down QWERTY keyboard as a back up for when long messages need to be created quickly. Again we find 3G powering the newly improved Web browser that also supports HTML5 Web pages and access to Blackberry App World is still on offer.

A document editor takes control of email attachments with support for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files whilst staying up to date with your circle of friends is easy with social network feeds. Navigation issues have been covered again with Blackberry Maps and GPS.

The media player works hard on the Torch to offer up to 30 hours of music playback from one charge. The inclusion of a high-spec 5-megapixel camera makes this Blackberry an ideal choice for handling various work issues whilst providing all the entertainment needed when the working day is done.
Both handset will be hitting our shelves soon, and we are afraid to say that making a choice between these two models is going to be a difficult decision as they both have so much on offer.

Nokia N8 Preview

Created with a keen eye on absolute perfection the Nokia N8 has one of the richest feature sets so far from this year’s superb collection of smartphones. A powerful optical package sees on-demand Web TV from sites such as National Geographic and CNN among many others and can be enjoyed on the 3.5-inch OLED display in 16:9 nHD widescreen. For enjoying media features with friends and family the high definition HDMI port allows a cable to be connected to a TV or projector and Dolby Digital Plusbrings a crisp and 3D styled audio experience when connected to a home theatre sound system.
Professional images can be captured with the finest of details thanks to the 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, xenon flash and a photo/video-editing suite. To ensure the N8 is top of its class Nokia has also included high-end features such as face recognition, geo-tagging, music/text & image overlaying on captured footage and a variety of transitional effects for making the perfect slideshow.

The Symbian v3 Operating System provides a widget based menu system with 3 customisable home screens that rotate with a simple swipe of the finger. Updates from social networking sites are provided in a live feed on the home screen and a dedicated SNS widget allows 1 or all of your social networking sites to be updated at once. A refined 3G HSDPA Internet connection provides a gateway to a multitude of downloadable applications from the Ovi
store and the inclusion of a Stereo FM radio and the Nokia Music Player ensures there’s plenty to keep you entertained when offline. A full range of connectivity options has been engineered into the compact and sleek design
with WI-FI, Bluetooth, push email and GPS with Ovi maps providing turn-by-turn navigation on foot or by car.

The Nokia N8 has all that is needed to impress even the most demanding of users and is set to be the highlight of this years new releases.

With the intense competition in the smartphone sector right now Nokia will probably keep the price as low as they can, this means that many networks will most likely offer a free Nokia N8 on contract.

Sony Ericsson adds to their already superb line up.

Mobile Phone giant Sony Ericsson have recently launched the Xperia X10 Mini Pro. Although it’s a bit of a mouthful it certainly has a spec worthy of such a long name and comes from a long list of fantastic phones from Sony Ericsson. Phones such as the impressive Satio, a camera phone to rival anything on the market with an impressive 12 megapixels and super sharp touch screen, as well as the popular Tocco Lite – currently the most popular Pay As You Go phone in the UK.

So more about the X10 Mini Pro.

As the name suggests the X10 Mini is one of the smallest Android phones on the market measuring just 90 x 52 x 17mm – not bad considering there is a full QWERTY keyboard hiding in there somewhere! It may be small but this funky device boasts a fantastic range of features including a 5 megapixel camera with a number of image enhancing images to snap great phones and a decent music player. Great for messaging the QWERTY keyboard allows users to type super fast messages and the 2.6 inch touchscreen displays the home screen perfectly which can easily be customised with a huge choice of applications from the Android marketplace.

Other features include an FM radio, GPS, social networking integration and Bluetooth to make the Xperia X10 Mini a fantastic pocket friendly device.

Deals start at just £20 a month with 300 minutes and Unlimited texts!

Swype Technology – The Next Generation

There comes a time when tapping away at a QWERTY keyboard is too much like hard work, so the geniuses that brought us T9 predictive text are now introducing Swype technology to the mass market. Instead of pressing individual letters on the keyboard, users just drag their fingers from one letter to another in a fluid motion and the computer works it out from there.

It doesn’t even have to be that precise as the software can work out what you are trying to type. In demonstrations, hurdles like capitals and double letters are overcome by pausing or doing a squiggle, while spacing and punctuation are automatic.

Swype’s inventor Cliff Kushler said the technology could have an enormous impact and be used anywhere people have to use a keyboard, such as video games, sat-nav devices and ticket machines. ‘We’ve squeezed the desktop computer, complete with keyboard and mouse, into something that fits in a pocket,’ he said.

Obviously Swype technology has no taken over yet but the Samsung Galaxy S already has the technology and another 50 models worldwide are set to feature it by the end of the year.

Won Park, director of United States technology sourcing at Samsung said: ‘It could become the de facto standard for tablets, next-generation TVs or next-generation remote controls. It has tremendous potential.’

Nokia to change the way we use our mobiles.

You may not have heard about Near Field Communication technology before but it may have a big impact on the way we use our mobile phones in the future. Near Field Communication technology (NFC for short) is a short distance wireless communication technology that allows data to be transferred over about 10cm.

Still confused? It basically makes life simple by using your phone instead of a swipecard to pay bills or pay for public transport for example. Due to the close proximity of the data transfer it is much more secure than Bluetooth and it is super fast.

As of 2011 all Nokia smartphones will come with this technology on board to make it a much more wide spread feature of mobile phones. These new devices are expected to include microSD cards and probably an embedded secure element. Third party app developers will soon get the needed tools so they can start work on applications.

Motorola set to release the Flipout.

Motorola’s Flipout is the oddest looking Android handset to date, with a square touchscreen which flips out to reveal a five row QWERTY keyboard. Although it looks like the kind of social networking phone aimed at teenagers it is actually a very powerful smartphone device with a great user interface and superb range if features.

The 2.8 inch touchscreen displays Motorola’s MOTOBLUR service which can be customised with widgets to suit you and displays live updates from your friends on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter straight to your phone.

Being an Android smartphone means that the Flipout comes with a full range of Google apps including Maps, Gmail and Search and also has access to the Android Market to download a huge range of apps. The Flipout also includes a 3 megapixel camera which comes integrated with Kodak technology to capture more enhanced images, FM radio and digital compass as well as a decent web browser with Wi-Fi support.

Although it has an unusual shape which might take a bit of getting used to, the Flipout comes in an array of fab colours including Rebel Pink, Dark Sapphire, Fairway Green and Poppy Red and is sure to get people talking.

The Flipout is set to be released any time soon but if you simply can’t wait for an Android phone check out our smartphone section at www.mobilesplease.co.uk

BlackBerry gets another Pearl.

BlackBerry manufacturers RIM have been pretty quiet over the past year or so but the next Pearl has now been announced to succeed the two year old 8110. The Pearl 3G as the name suggests now comes with 3G support as well as a number of improved features making the candy bar phone a great upgrade choice for BlackBerry fans.

First of all RIM have thankfully got rid of the trackball and replaced it with a small optical trackpad which is great news for those who are tired of using the dodgy trackball and want the phones main navigation feature to be more resilient.  The Pearl will come in two different variations; the 9100 with a SureType keyboard (half QWERTY) and the 9105 which has opted for a traditional keypad (probably to attract users that have not yet used a BlackBerry device). Both Pearls will feature dedicated media keys on the top of the handset to get quick and easy access to the phones music player.

Although the Pearl 3G is almost identical in size to the 8110, it is twice as fast with a 624MHz processor and comes with an increased battery life of up to 5.5 hours talk time. The screen is much improved with a 360 x 400 pixel resolution display giving a much clearer picture for all your messaging needs. The user interface has also been improved using the BlackBerry OS v5.0 making it a lot less cluttered and a lot more user friendly.

Other features of this promising device include a decent 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, Bluetooth, GPS support, iTunes and Window Media Player support and upto 32GB of expandable memory.

RIM have said that the Pearl 3G should be available in May 2010 but as of yet there has been no guidance on pricing or networks. If you can’t wait to get your hands on a BlackBerry then Mobiles Please compares all the BlackBerry deals in the UK.

The new flagship phone is so packed full of brilliant features that the Finnish phone manufacturer’s could now be the ones to beat in the smartphone and camera phone market. So what’s so exciting i hear you say?

Well the 12 megapixel camera has image enhancing features to die for. The 28mm wide angle camera boasts Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash and HD video recording with built in video editing tools. Nokia have even said that the image sensor “rivals those found in compact digital cameras”…exciting stuff!

The high end features don’t stop at the camera though, the N8 is the ultimate in entertaining phones. With HD quality film and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound as well as access to local and global Web TV services the N8 provides the perfect cinema experience wherever you are. The Nexus One makes it’s UK debut on 30th April.

Today Vodafone announced that their customers can get the Google Nexus One from the 30th April from at £35 a month. Google fans can pre-order the Nexus One over the next four days on the Vodafone website (not google.com/phone). We expect that in-store availability will be around the 5th May.

Being such a hot phone, the Nexus One will keep customers in 18 or 24 month contracts with tariffs starting at £25 with a £99 charge for the phone. The £35 a month plan offers the Nexus One for free over a 2 year contract.

Last month, Goldman Sachs downgraded its estimate for Nexus One sales this year from 3.5m units to just 1m worldwide. This is probably due to the amount of competition on offer from manufacturers such as HTC and Apple.  The HTC Desire (the Nexus One’s big brother) offers the same spec as the Nexus One but is available on a number of networks pushing it into the limelight and making a lot of sales! Apple are also brewing up a storm with the iPhone 4.0/HD giving customers even more to think about when purchasing ‘the coolest phone on the market’.

This is exciting news for Google fans if they couldn’t get their hands on a Nexus One before, but it feels like Google have left it a bit too late to launch their device in the UK, as the mobile phone world moves quickly on to the latest ‘hot’ device, casting many decent phones into the shadows.
