Apple iPhone 8 Plus review

The big brother of the iPhone 8 has been flying off the shelves since it was released, in my Apple iPhone 8 Plus review I see what this bigger version delivers.

Apple iPhone 8 Plus design

The iPhone 8 Plus has a metal and glass construction, the glass is the most durable smartphone glass ever used on a phone. The phone is constructed with precision and this makes it water and dust-resistant.

The iPhone 8 Plus is available in gold, silver or space grey and measuring just 7.5mm thick this sleek handset feels superb in the hand.

iPhone 8 Plus features

As the name suggests, the iPhone 8 Plus has a bigger display than the iPhone 8, a 5.5-inch Retina screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The display is superb thanks to the latest True Tone technology, this has a much wider colour gamut and senses the ambient light and adjusts the display.

3D Touch is on board so you can access different features and apps with a light press or hard press on the display. The iPhone 8 Plus includes Touch ID for securing the phone with your fingerprint, this can also be used to purchase apps through the iStore or buy things using Apple Pay.

The iPhone 8 Plus delivers Augmented Reality in a big way, games and apps are available from the App Store. These AR apps will overlay graphics onto the real world. This uses the camera to view your surroundings and the powerful A11 Bionic chip and GPU create AR graphics in real time.

Siri is on board and there have been even more improvements with the digital assistant, more natural speech patterns and the ability to recognise more commands make it even more useful.

iOS 11 is on board so you can get all of your favourite apps, while the battery life remains the same as the previous iPhone Plus model. This gives you up to 21 hours of talk time and 13 hours of internet browsing.

iPhone 8 Plus camera features

The iPhone 8 Plus has a dual camera on the back, this is made up of a 12-megapixel telephoto lens and a wide angle lens. These work together for amazing photo quality and allow for some excellent photo effects.

Portrait Lighting is a new feature that uses face detection and depth maps to create professional-looking photos. There is a choice of different effects such as Natural light, contour light and studio light. The iPhone 8 Plus camera includes 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.

The camera features are extensive on the iPhone 8 Plus, these include a QUAD LED True Tone Flash and an image signal processor that can recognise objects, motion and people in the scene.

There is a 7-megapixel selfie camera and the advanced photo app will save all photos using compression software to save space.

Verdict:

The Apple iPhone 8 Plus is excellent for mobile photography and the performance of the latest Bionic processing chip makes this phone insanely good to use. The high-quality finish and excellent user experience make this phone one of the top smartphone releases of 2017.
