iPad Air 2 design

The iPad Air 2 certainly has the looks and as soon as you pick one up you will notice the quality of the durable aluminium body with its mono-crystalline diamond cut bevelled edges. There is also more of an opportunity to express yourself with a choice of colours which sees a new gold colour screen added to the existing silver and space grey that we saw on the original iPad Air.

It is instantly noticeable that since the original Air, Apple has worked hard to cut the weight down to 437 grams and the body is much slimmer too at just 6.1mm thin.

The 9.7-inch Retina display has a great resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at 264 ppi and the iPad Air 2 has an anti-reflective coating that makes it practical to use this tablet outside under direct sunlight. In fact this is the least reflective display of any tablet in the world with a reduced glare of 56 percent.

The display is also scratch resistant and has an oleophobic coating which repels the fingers natural oils to ensure there are no smudges or prints to hinder the visual experience.

Once you began to make quick gestures across the touch sensitive Retina display you will notice a more accurate response with improved screen sensitivity and inside we find 64-bit architecture, 2.5x faster graphics and a CPU that is 40 percent faster.

iPad Air 2 features

Probably the most important feature is simply that the Apple iPad Air 2 has a set of apps that have been created just for an iPad’s sized screen so you will not be using stretched out apps that were designed for the iPhone.

iPad Air 2 apps

You get the usual set of Apple goodies pre-installed and we love that Family Sharing is included and this allows up to six family members to enjoy and share the same films, books and apps.

iOS 8 is onboard and among other things it will let you start a project on one device and finish it on another and of course the iCloud Drive is ready to store any kind of document.

Touch ID security lets you unlock the iPad Air 2 with your fingerprint and now you can make secure purchases via iTunes, iBooks and the App Store with a single touch.

iPad Air 2 camera

The iPad Air 2 camera is one of the most exciting aspects of this tablet and the initial photographic experience can be extended further with a choice of camera related apps, but more on these later.

The 8MP iSight camera has improved noise reduction for sharper and clearer images and is complimented by video recording at 1080p HD and a forward facing FaceTime HD camera with 1.2 megapixels and dual microphones for clearer audio with reduced background noise.

A variety of shooting modes exist and these include panorama mode for capturing epic shots at up to 43MP. Time-lapse video recording lets you capture the action over 30 minutes or 30 hours while slo-mo mode shoots at 120fps at 720p HD and you can select which portion of your recording to slow down.

Panorama mode

Burst mode takes 10 photos per second and works with both cameras and with advanced blink and smile detection the iPad Air 2 even suggests the best image. Timer mode takes care of group selfies by offering between a 3 and 10 second delay to allow you to get ready and burst mode is automatic here, helping you get the perfect result.

Built in editing apps are included allowing you to adjust the exposure, brightness, colour and contrast or apply filters or edit movies with the iMovie tool.

A mix of free and paid for Apps from the Apple App Store can really take your camera aided experience to new levels. You could use apps like Ubersense Coach and Coach’s Eye to analyse and improve your golf technique.

Or maybe you would like to be able to distinguish the stars from the planets with Star Walk 2 or navigate around the landscape with the Theodolite app.

Perhaps you would like see how furniture will look within your home before you buy it with virtual furniture in the Homestyler app or be more productive by scanning, storing and sending images with apps offering optical character recognition to make these images become editable docs.
