Alcatel U5 review

The Alcatel brand is well known for delivering budget devices, and here in my Alcatel U5 review I take a look at one of their affordable phones to see what you get for your money.

The phone is constructed of more affordable materials and you can feel that when you hold it. Alcatel has added some design elements to it with a textured back with a micro-pattern that works round into the sides. The phone feels slightly heavy at 168g however it is not too chunky with a chassis that measures 9.95mm thick.

The phone has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels, the screen does not perform as well as some of the other phones I have tested, but at this price point, it’s decent enough.

There is a quad-core processor and 1GB RAM under the hood, this does make the Alcatel U5 struggle with more demanding apps. It handles everyday tasks and browsing well enough and basic games perform fine on this Alcatel.

The Alcatel U5 is an Android Marshmallow device so there are lots of familiar apps on there including Chrome, YouTube and Gmail. The 8GB of on board memory can be boosted with a microSD card and there is an app called Phone Guard which will boost the phone performance and improve battery power.

The battery is a 2,050mAh unit which delivered enough power for normal use, moderate to heavy use made the battery drain quite quickly.

Alcatel U5 camera

The rear camera has a resolution of 5-megapixels and there is an LED flash for illuminating your subject. There are the usual shooting modes with Panorama, Time Lapse and Night Mode. The camera includes Electronic Image Stabilisation and you can either press the shutter button on the screen or use the volume button.

Alcatel has added lots of features to the Selfie camera with various shooting modes and its own LED flash. The Selfie editing apps include Face Mask to add a live filter and Face Show that adds animations. You can create a collage of selfie shots using Instant Collage and Face Beauty will apply filters that can be adjusted to your preference.

Verdict:

The Alcatel U5 will not compete with the likes of the Galaxy S8 but it isn’t supposed to. This budget handset delivers everything you would expect at this price point. The Selfie options are a bonus feature and the performance is good enough to choose this for a first Android or for anyone that wants Android at a low price.
