The Future of Mobile Technology

Old vs New20 years ago brick-like phones such as the Motorola 8500x had no display and did no more than make calls. Who would have thought that mobile phones can now replace your camera, music player, organizer, TV and even your computer all in innovatively designed, pocket-sized handsets!

With smartphones dominating the market and new phone designs constantly emerging I want to look into what the future of mobile phones has in store.

It seems that mobiles that you can wear are going to be popular for the future with consumers relying on their mobile phones more frequently throughout the day. We have already seen Dyal’s sWaP phone which features a 1.3 mega pixel camera, mp3 and mp4 player and Bluetooth and have seen LG’s GD910 which supports 3G and includes video calling making it every sci-fi lover’s dream! Nokia also have some concepts of soft, bendable phones using nanotechnology, the 888 and the Morph which give the user a cool looking device that is very accessible. You can take a look at what the Nokia Morph has to offer by following this link.

If you are true Apple devotee and want the latest super cool handset from the Californian brand, the iPhone Nano looks like it will be coming soon. The Nano will be a slimmer, more basic phone that would offer EDGE network speeds but there is hope that we will see Wi-Fi N and wireless media synchronising and memory capacities ranging from 8GB to 16GB.

If you are more interested in the latest iPhone(the fantastic 3GS) then Mobilesplease has a great range of deals for you to choose from.

Apple turns Orange!

iPhone OrangeThe Apple iPhone has just been voted the coolest brand in the UK, knocking the Aston Martin off the top spot after 4 years. With Apple trying to boost sales of the extremely popular handset the iPhone is branching out to Orange and Vodafone after two years of exclusivity with rivals O2. Over 1 million iPhones have been sold in the UK through O2 and Apple have their sights set on the other 49 million mobile phone users, making Orange (which has the largest 3G network covering more people in the UK than any other operator) the ideal network to increase sales. Orange and Vodafone have not yet given any details on tariffs and prices or a release date yet over 65,000 people registered their interest on the Orange site within hours of Orange releasing the news.

Unfortunately Vodafone fans will be unable to grab an iPhone until early next year but it is expected that O2 and Orange will battle it out over the Christmas period in an exciting price war. Orange do have an advantage with pricing as they don’t share revenue with Apple like O2 do, however, O2 have exclusive rights to the Palm Pre, the iPhone’s rival.

So it’s great news for all those Orange fanatics who have wanted an iPhone for years or those who want to see tariff prices drop for the must have phone. To make sure you get the best iPhone deal in the run up to Christmas register your interest to ”iphone at mobilesplease.co.uk” to be notified as soon as the deals come in.

ITG show off the xpPhone

xpPhoneWith Smartphonesbeing increasingly dominant on the mobile market we are expecting our phones to be faster and more powerful than ever! China-based manufacturer ITG has launched their distinctive xpPhone that looks more like a tablet than a mobile phone. With a huge 4.8 touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, AMD processor, 512MB or 1GB RAM and both SSD and HDD storage the xpPhone is much more powerful than a smartphone. It’s more like a netbook that runs Windows XP with phone capabilities.

The xpPhone is easy to use with the great 4.8 inch touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keyboard as well as a D-pad on the left next to two mouse buttons and numpad on the right as well as a small touchpad. ITG says the xpPhone offers the “full internet experience” with Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM or CDMA, HSDPA/HSUPA thanks to the built-in 3G modem, Bluetooth, GPS and optional WiMax. Three modem versions are on offer – “Vodafone”, “AT&T” and “Orange” – though there’s no indication of which bands each choice provides.

Unfortunately ITG has only put a 1.3 megapixel camera on board which is disappointing but if you plan on using this phone purely for business then it is not too much of a worry! If you are worried about battery life the xpPhone gives you 5 hours of talk time or 5 days of standby time with the regular netbook giving you 7 to 12 hours of power autonomy. Rumoured measurements are about 158 x 75 x 16 mm making it a pretty hefty phone…but a handy netbook.

The ITG xpPhone will be available in white, red and black but we are unsure of the the price and release date at the moment.

If you can’t wait for this phone Mobilesplease has a great range of smartphones available including the Nokia N97.

The App that will change the way scientists work EVERYWHERE!

A mobile phone app will help scientists collect and analyse data from “in the field”, anywhere in the world!
The EpiCollect software will enable scientists to collate data from certain mobiles in a web-based database on topics such as ‘disease spread or the occurrence of rare species’. This data is instantly analysed and plotted on a map for others to see on certain mobiles. These certain phones are ones that run Google’s Android open-source operating system and are hoped to be available on an iPhone-compatible version of the application soon.

Imperial College London

So how does it work?

The phones’ GPS system automatically logs users’ locations, so data they are collecting is plotted by location using Google Maps. Then anyone can access the database online, or from their phone instantly. According to lead researcher on the project David Aanensen, it is the ‘full integration into a central and widely-accessible database makes EpiCollect particularly useful’. “Many of the other tools that allow one to send data by mobile phone don’t have an easy way for any of the researchers to look at any of the data in almost real-time,” he told BBC News.

“We’re investigating the use of the phones for the project; rather than researchers taking a GPS out into the field and recording their results on paper, we can get all of this data much more quickly – and it limits the amount of equipment they have to take out into the field,” Mr Aanensen said. He added that there will be a potential to use this approach with school projects. He cited the classic “quadrant” experiment in biology, in which schoolchildren set out a fixed area in a field for example, and count the number of species in that area.

“If we have a database version, it allows them to compare between their school and another school or a set of schools in one country versus a set in another country, and the natural ability to use a phone rather than paper might be more attractive to school kids.” This is one of the many ways in which mobiles phones are changing the way many industries work.

Social Networking Phones

With the news that Facebook has crossed the 300 million users mark we look at the latest handsets that are perfect for those who can’t stand being away from their favourite social networking sites for more than 5 minutes!

snp

INQ1 Social Networking Phone

The INQ1 was recently given the honor of the best mobile handset award at the GSMA awards and there are many great reasons why. The INQ1 is dedicated to social networking  and is designed to keep you in touch with your friends wherever you are. Facebook, Skype and Windows Live Messenger are always connected to make sure you never miss a thing. A little feature that I love is that you can merge your contacts from Facebook, Skype and Windows Live Messenger which means that when you receive a call from a Facebook friend the INQ1 displays their latest facebook profile picture. The fantastic bit about this phone is the price. With an RRP of only £79.99 and some great contracts that include unlimited browsing, this handset really is great for those who don’t want to spend all of their pocket money at once.

Coming Soon…

Due for release at the end of September are two great social networking phones that are going to give the INQ1 a run for it’s money. The Samsung S3650 Corby is made for those who love to customize their gadgets and ensure they never miss out on the latest gossip on Facebook. The distinctly shaped Corby comes with two extra ‘Fashion Jackets’ which are bright interchangeable rear covers to make sure you don’t get bored of your cool handset to easily. Upload photos and videos directly to YouTube, Flickr and Picasa and update your status on all your favourite social networking sites with ease on the 2.8 inch touchscreen. Also due for release soon is the Nokia 7705 Twist which allows you to twist and turn your handset in all kinds of directions on a chassis that neatly packs together to form a nice little pocket friendly handset. The phone features a full QWERTY keyboard, 3 mega pixel camera and support from email, IM, MMS and SMS. This cute little social networking phone also allows you to customise your handset for incoming calls with its glowing light ring that changes colour depending on who is calling.

These three handsets are perfect is you love to network on the go and the best bit is… they are super affordable!
